    • Replacement for Freedxf plugin?

I've been using SketchUp 14 free version since it came out, because I frequently need to import dxf files and the Freedxf plugin enabled me to do so. Now I understand that the author of the plugin no longer supports it. I'd like to use the latest (free) version of SketchUp, and I'm wondering if there are any other plugins that enable importing dxf files. I searched the forums, but didn't find any recent discussions of this.

      Thanks in advance

    • RE: [Plugin] FreeDXF Importer

Does version 0.9.0 work with SketchUp 2015 free version? I'm currently using v0.8.2 with SketchUp 2014 (works great, thanks!)

I'm also having trouble installing this plugin into Sketchup 2014. I may have the wrong version; I see above that the latest is 0.8.7, but in the filename I downloaded it's 0.8.2, which appears to have been created 2 months ago, and I can't find a more current version. Is "0.8.7" a typo? If not, is there a link to the newer version? I got it from the following link at the Sketchucation download store:

      Link Preview Image
SketchUp Plugins | PluginStore | SketchUcation

SketchUp Plugin and Extension Store by SketchUcation provides free downloads of hundreds of SketchUp extensions and plugins

      favicon

      (sketchucation.com)

      The filename is freedfx_v0.8.2.rbz

I pasted the file to the following folder on my computer, and restarted SketchUp:

      C:\Users\tom\AppData\Roaming\SketchUp\SketchUp 2014\SketchUp\Plugins

When I try to find it in SketchUp, I don't see a "plugins" icon anywhere, and when I open Ruby console, nothing appears. Have I left out a step?

      Thanks in advance,
      Tom

    • Sketchup 7 free dxf import

I recently got a new computer. I went online and downloaded SketchUp 7, which I had been using because that was the last update that allowed dxf imports in the free software.
once the pro version expired, dxf import no longer works. I seem to remember a plugin or some kind of tweak that allowed the import functionality, but I imported all my plugins from the old computer and it still doesn't work. Any ideas, besides buying the pro version? Can't afford that right now.

    • SU pro upgrades

So far, I've been making do with the free versions, but I'm thinking of paying for pro at some point. I was just wondering how much the upgrades cost. If you paid your $500 for version 7 pro, how much did it cost to upgrade to version 8?

Your first solution worked like a charm, and I'll be trying the plugin for SU8 soon.

      Many thanks!

    • Sketchup 7

I've been using SU7.1 and 8 (both free versions.) I keep 7.1 because it allows me (with a plugin) to import dxf files without paying for the pro version. I recently bought a new laptop, and can't find a site online that will allow me to download the older version. I tried finding the original exe in my downloads folder, but only V8 is there. Any suggestions, preferably that don't involve spending $500?

      Thanks in advance

    • SketchUp 8

Just watched the intro video for SU8. Of the 3 main improvements, 2 are only for Pro and the other seems mainly to do with locating models on Google Earth and using BuildingMaker. For us non-pro woodworking users, is there any reason to upgrade to 8? Do you lose the ability to import dxfs, like they did last time in version 7.1, then recanted with a plugin? Are there any features not mentioned in the video (and not limited to pro) that would be useful for woodworking?

    • RE: Sketchup and a winder staircase

I've done stairs with landings, but no winders. Screencaps look nicely done, but it's hard to tell about process without the skp file. I did learn one trick about drawing stairs: draw a vertical line from floor to floor, then divide into segments equal to the number of risers. This gives a "story pole" for constructing the treads at the correct height.

    • RE: Importing 2d DWG files for extruding

      Dave,

Do you have any experience with raster-to-vector software? Especially the freeware variety? I've imported a number of jpg files as the beginning of a Sketchup project, and always did the tracing myself, using the line and arc tools, mostly. A very tedious process.

    • RE: Crosscut Sled

I found it in one of the help forums (fora?). In the model, click on the "G" on the bottom left of the screen, log out, and log back in. Go figure.

    • RE: Crosscut Sled

I tried that first, got "Unauthorized. error 401" in the popup window. Then I clicked on the home button in the popup, and tried clicking on "sign in"; no response. That's when I went to 3D Warehouse in Firefox, logged in using my gmail account, tried to upload the model, and got the KMZ error message. I searched the Google help files, and found something about maybe having too common a nickname in my Google profile, so I changed from Tom to TomWinFL; same result, even after closing and reopening the skp file.

    • RE: Crosscut Sled

Thanks, Dave, for the kind feedback.

I tried to upload this to 3D warehouse, per your suggestion on LJ, and got an error message:

"Only files of type KMZ (KML 2.1 or greater) can be uploaded."

I've never tried to upload to 3D Warehouse, and I'm not familiar with KMZ or KML. do I have to do some sort of conversion to skp files before uploading?

    • Crosscut Sled

This is basically a “Super Sled” from Eagle Lake Woodworking, with a few modifications. I didn’t have any T-track, nor a slot cutting router bit, so I made my fence from 2 pieces of 1x white pine, cutting the slots on the table saw before glue-up. I clamped the fence halves to my 6 foot level to get them as straight as possible. I know most sleds have a hardwood fence, but I figured it was worth a try, since I didn’t have enough maple for a fence, and it’s hard to find in Florida. If it warps I can always replace it later. I used what maple I had for the flipstop, which is held together with a 6” piece of #8-32 threaded rod. I made the hold downs by gluing up thin strips of 1 ½” wide pine bent and clamped to a simple form. (I also use them on my drill press table.) The slots in the sled will also accommodate a future miter jig, and maybe a vertical panel or tenon jig.sled.jpg

    • RE: Bedside table

You can always click "hide rest of model" when in edit mode. Click "view," then "component edit" to find this option. I go back and forth a lot on hide or unhide, so here's another way: In "view" click "toolbars" then "options". This will display a series of icons, one of which will allow you to toggle between hiding and unhiding the rest of the model in edit mode.

I'd love to see that model. Have you posted it anywhere?

    • Sketchyphysics Trebuchet

My first semi-successful attempt at sketchyphysics, a toy trebuchet. I had to force it to stop upright by morphing the "floor" and making it invisible (click "unhide all" to see.) So the mast doesn't stay vertical due to gravity, it slams into an invisible barrier. If you look closely, it's actually popped out of the frame by the collision. Is there any way to assign weights to components in sketchyphysics? I'll post a pic after I build it, if it works.
