    • RE: Why Sketchup?

I am an experience computer user, I design software for a living.

My interest is house design and conception. My wife and I have built a property portfolio of houses for a pension.

IMHO Sketchup is not good for House or building design. I use Arcon myself, it kicks Sketchup into next week as far as I am concerned.

However for conceptualisation and 3D illustrations Sketchup is awesome. I use it for all sorts of things, studwork, kitchen layouts, bathroom layouts. I get the drawings for the baths, units etc and make them in Sketchup, I can then see exactly what they look like. I make 3D drawings for my contractors so they can see exactly what I mean.

I found Sketchup hard to get into and still run into problems. Compared to Autocad it is easy. You get out what you put in.

Maybe one day I will be an expert like some of the people here but in the meantime I will carry on trundling out wicked 3D illustrations, get a buzz out of every one!

    • RE: Free SU users: Would you pay for exporters separately?

      Hi

I use Sketchup for detailing architectural CAD drawings, making detailed drawings of electricity boxes, decking etc that my architectural drawing package does not do, making custom kitchen cabinets etc. I use Sketchup Pro so no problem for me.

I know that there are lots of people who do this for a hobby and would be happy to pay for 3DS export so they could use their SU models in their CAD package.

I dont use SU for modelling houses as it does not work for me on that level. I do however import my 3DS house into SU and do the landscaping.

Maybe they should adopt the I-Phone model and sell lots of extras at a low price, seems to work for Mr Jobs!

      Regards

    • RE: Cutting a model in half

      Hi

      I'm still struggling with this.

Zorro 2 persistently crashes on me running V7 Pro on XPPro and crashes Sketchup. It works on very simple models however. This is a stable machine that I use allday everyday.

When I tried the alternative to create a cutting plane and intersect the model a lot of the geometry is not cut for some reason. Its a complex model...

Any ideas, I dont like to be beaten!!!

I dont have to do this, I like to learn by challenge!

    • Cutting a model in half

      Hi

Thanks in advance for your help.

I am a novice Sketchup user but a very experienced Architectural designer. I am not an architect, I work maximising space in buildings and use Arcon for that.

Anyway, I find Sketchup great for making 3DS objects - windows, doors, filing cabinets etc

Yesterday I was out in the car and saw an amazing custom car. It had the front end of a small Vauxhall (GM) and the back end was a tubular chassis with a rear mounted V8.

I would like to model something similar, so I downloaded a model of a small Vauxhall and used the section tool to get the front end of the car, so far, so good. I then tried to add the backend of a race car but the section tool hid the back end I was trying to attach.

The question is, '..is there a way to simply cut the car in half?'

      Any advice welcome, thanks

      Peter
