Hi Tig, Max from Quarr-it.com came up to give us a SU course recently & mentioned your name as one of the people who might be able to help us (spoke very highly of you). I'm based in the north of England as well & I have to admit my skills with writing code for SU are very basic/non-existant. Max however was impressed with what we were doing with SU & said that we had already pushed it to it's limits & would need some help with a plug in or script to get it to do what we wanted.

Basically we are using attributes to ask standard questions about objects so that the people entering the info know exactly what type of value needs to be entered. This data is then exported to generate some cool stuff about the model.

Hi, we're using attributes & DCs to store information about models by adding attributes to components (from a custom drop down menu) & then copying that component to make the model. We need to make sure we have the correct set of attributes applied at the start of this process as to make each attribute entry unique we are also having to make all the objects unique once the model is complete (see separate post on using DCs to store info). If we then want to add another attribute to all of the objects we would only be able to do this by editing each one separately (big pain). So the question is does anyone know of a way of adding a new attribute to multiple unique objects?

Hi we're working with DCs & using them to store information about objects (i.e. date installed, manufactured etc) to build up a record of projects as they are constructed. We have had to make similar objects unique in order to do this because if we do not then when a value is entered into a component the value appears in all similar components. This value can be over-written to enter a unique value but does anyone know of a way of surpressing the value from appearing in other similar objects when it's entered without making the objects unique? This would prevent an old value (from another component) being left in a component when one hadn't yet been entered for that component.

I have another question that I'l post separately about adding new attributes to multiple components.

I'm relatively new to SU so forgive my terminology if it's not quite right but this answer & one I got from another forum is helping me with a few things I'm trying to achieve in SU. I have added some custom attributes to the 'add attribute' drop down list in Component Attributes by modifying the component.js file so that I can add custom attribute lists to objects in a way thats quicker than typing them in. However this is only the first step in a series of things I'd like to be able to do & you express a willingness to help so it'd be appreciated if you could point me in the right direction with any of this:

1. Is it possible to make the 'users can edit as a text box' a standard option for a custom attribute rather than having to select it?
2. Is there any way of stopping an attribute value automatically being copied to all similar objects? I notice that when an attribute such as summary is edited on one object that the value is automatically copied to all however when you go to the next object this value can be over written without affecting the previous entry. I would like to stop the first part so that the value first entered only applies to one object without the need to overwrite it when I get to the next one.
3. Is it possible to edit the same attribute on a selection of objects? Say I'd like to select three out of 6 objects and edit an enter the same value for these three & then select the next three out of the six & enter a different value.

Hopefully you will still see this even though it looks like the original posts were done a while ago.

I'm really new to Sketchup so forgive me if I use the wrong terminology but I'm trying to solve something that's driving me nuts! I'm using pro version 8 but I've only been using SU for a few months now. My question is: Is it possible to add a new attribute to multiple unique objects in one operation? I know how to add groups of custom attributes to the standard drop down list by modifying the component.js file which helps but it'd be good to take this a step further & create a script for adding attributes to multiple objects.

I'm using unique components to try and record information as something is created (as a record) & found it frustrating that when the objects are not unique & an attribute value is changed the same value was then shown in all objects that hadn't had a previous entry. I ended up making objects unique to overcome this problem. If anyone knows how to overcome this it would mean I don't need an answer to the first part!!

Hopefully I've managed to explain this properly without using numpty terminology!
