Silvershadow's Eye Candy 3 - H.M.C.S SNOWBERRY
H.M.C.S SNOWBERRY
The Flower Class corvettes will always be associated with the Battle of the North Atlantic, even though they were also used in all theatres of World War II. Alongside other escort ships she bore the main burden of the battle against the German submarines. The escort ships of this class were divided from the collaboration between the British Admiralty and the Smiths Dock Company, which in 1938 had a successful design for a commercial whaler called the Southern Pride. The main feature of this original design was that in accordance with merchant shipping practice it could easily be built in many small British dockyards and its basic engines could be handled by civilian dockyards. Sixty Flower Class corvettes had been ordered before war broke out and by the end of 1940 at total of 141 of the original design had been ordered. The first vessel (launched on 24.01.1940) was completed in 5 months, the subsequent ones at a rate of one every twenty three days. Once it had been decided that corvettes were no longer to be used as coastal escort ship, but on the high seas, some modifications had to be made. Later the vessels were given a different hull with extended forecastle that improved their thrust and overhang to protect them against the Atlantic seas. In the course of the war the corvettes were equipped, among other things, with radar, more and more powerful anti-aircraft weapons (AA MG or 20mm Oerlikon guns), More depth charges and at the end of 1941 with the โHedgehogโ anti submarine weapon. From 1943 they were equipped with better electronics. During this period many modifications were made to the bridge to incorporate new equipment and protections. These ships proved to be the most seaworthy and were used by navies throughout the world. (Total build 265) Displacement: 940 tons, power plant: 4-cylinder triple-expansion/Scotch boiler; capacity: 2750 hsp; speed: 16 knots; range: 4000 miles at 12kts. When in the spring of 1942 the German submarines moved their zone of operations to the American coastal region, the US Navy found itself obliged to make up for this full deficit of suitable vessels from British corvettes. 10 Corvettes were immediately delivered in America, and further 8 from Canadian shipyards. H.M.C.S Snowberry. This ship built by Davie Shipbuilding Lauzon, Quebec, was completed on 30th November 1940. She was ordered by the British Navy and on completion was transferred to the Royal Canadian Navy and used as a convoy ship in the North Atlantic. In November 1943, assisted by other escort vessels, she sank U-boat U536, 500 miles west of Cape Finisterre. She spend most of her life in the North Atlantic and a brief period in the English Channel, before she was returned to the Royal Navy in 1945 and scrapped in 1947.

Crew 6 / 79Hi guys. I bought this plastic model ship about 4 years ago and build it with my dad, doing a lot of research in it, actually trying to build every single detail on this ship as possible as a hobby. He passed away that year and building completely stopped. Last year when I finished the Black Hawk in September 2008, I looked at a lot of images what I can model next that can top the Black Hawk. I got this insane idea, maybe I should model my plastic boat which I never completed. I looked at the manual over and over and over and though, this is insane. It will take forever to get this done. Every time I pick up the book, I really got doubts, what if my drawing program wonโt handle it? So I closed my eyes and started about 8 days after I posted Candy 2. It took me about 7 to 8 months to build in my free time and a lot of trial and error went into it to get it started. The compilation took about a week of rendering and finalizing. I was always fascinated how the movie industry can model something, and use it in their film to make it believable. I am still wondering to how much detail they do model to make it work for a film. I am also a great gamer and love seeing how people show off their skills in building sets for games. Maybe one day, I want to do this for real. All these renders are modeled only in Sketchup, the ocean and boat. The sky was modeled in Vue. The final renders was only rendered in Vray for Sketchup and a bit of photoshop.
I want to thank my wife for putting up with me all these nights, not coming to bed and trying to finish this model. I proudly present, my most anticipated model I have done to date, THE H.M.C.S SNOWBERRY, this one is for you dad.
A friend once told me, โIf you want to be happy ,find something you love doing so much that
you would do it for free ,then do it so well that people will pay you to do it for them!โThe full post can be downloaded at box.net, sorry for the scaled down post, have to look at my cap size. Here is just a few

RE: Silvershadow's eye candy 1: The river runs thru it
Hi there, no it took me about 4 days to render my scene in parts during the day.
The modelling process took about a month if i could remember correctly. -
RE: VRay Render......a simple glass gone wrong!
can you post the glass so we can look at it?
Vray 1.5 have issues with breaking up smoothed geometry then anything is applied to a grouped object and renders facated. Check your entity info and click on the glass. It if does not show default color on the group, change it to default and apply the transparent fill on to the faces itself inside the group/component. Give us feedback on this if it helped. -
RE: Bigfoot (updated)
i like the first image the most. love it. The last image is also good, but the road looks a bit funny on the edges. hey i love your vegetation you are using on the sides of the road. Vue have some great ecosystems, presume that is not a standard eco system. Hee hee you should do an arena with this monster truck jumping 9 wrecked cars, lights going off as people takes photos. should be really cool.

RE: V-Ray Kitchen
almost done...tweaking bits and pieces on my renderings, but i actually finished the model last week the 22 June. Its coming soon, don't worry, i am probably the most excited of all of us here lol.

RE: V-Ray Kitchen
I really like it. The only thing i can pick up when i looked at it immediately that looked a bit out of place is the kitchen table in front. Its got those scew lines on the corner. i dont know if its baked by using a bit of sketchup line overlay on the table, but the rest look really good. And like aartysmedia said, the back wood texture need some work. Great job

RE: Silvershadows eye candy 2 : BLACK HAWK
i think any program has its ups and downs in modelling different parts where its maybe easy in one application and hard in the other one. Haven't played with Rhino yet. Mixing platforms is sometimes the best to get good results, the more you know and are able to do..the better. Sketchup is pretty cool still and still try to push it harder and harder. The more practice, the better you get. I think this works for anything in life..if you stop practicing, you rust up and forget. Best solution, find something you like, and stick to that as you main modelling engine.

RE: Newbie Asking for Feedback
firstly welcome. Hope you like it here
Nice renders, keep posting as you get more on your list -
RE: Silvershadows eye candy 2 : BLACK HAWK
i know its not as easy and is more of a trial and error and sometimes comes to manually fill spaces to get the look right. Body work of anything do take probably the longest in models like these. Don't give up, you'll get it right

RE: Modo 302 and 401
nice renders.
How long have you been using Modo and where did you learn to use it? I really am interested in looking into this program for further development for myself -
RE: Some new Renders..
No sorry didn't do that project
I usually use 1250x1250 as a max size texture, if my textures give problems to render
Vray can manage bigger textures...but sometimes do run into trouble when the model gets bigger. So id say 1250x1250 is probably quite safe -
RE: Silvershadows eye candy 2 : BLACK HAWK
hi ceesboersen
Making the form of the helicopter was easy with a little bit of trial and error too. First step, i probably should have shown it. I trace the helicopter from the bottom and side. Then i extrude both (bottom and side to meet each other) and then i intersect it with each other. And then just cut off the parts i dont need. I only need half of the model, so i also cut the model in half. Creating ribs is a random thing and yo uput it in as you think it would be useful further up. Once there and you have the ribs, you dont need the rest, so i delete it. Rounding the edges, and then used a tool called skin. This links 2 planes together. So i did that per rib to fill up the model. I know this sounds a little vague, but i will try to explain in my next post.

much appreciated and thanks -
RE: Some new Renders..
Hi there, thanx, not too many textures were used creating these renders. To be honest sketchup can take a nice punch on poly, but do suffer on the texture side and makes it really slow as your model gets bigger. The first model, with the weird columns were giving problems on the rendering side so i got more ram for my 32 bit machine, and it held up ok for the renderings. I do not have that powerful machine at the office neither at home, (office = quad core with 4 gig ram 32 bit windows. Home 3.4 core due pro with 2 gig ram) But there is always a fear...is this model too big, will it render, what if it does not render, what do i change. I usually go back to my textures and export them to a file, and then check for abnormal size and dimension, and change that first and try again till it do render.

RE: Transformers
Dude, great work!
I think its is really hard to model something like this.. and that it actually works is even more impressive.
Hi 5. You should post the video (please just not you tube, we are blocked to see it) any other format, but it should be interesting to see a wireframe model or semi cut away of the car for instance showing the folded robot. Nice!! -
RE: [REQ] Displacement ruby
hey guys, dont worry about that "poly count" issue. Sub divide and smooth, yes it makes high poly stuff from simple geometry but SO many people had find use to it, even if it had a high poly generator that is problematic. If this tool can be made, the people that really want to use it, will use it, and those who say i cant use it because my pc cant handle it, so be it. But id say it would be a really awesome thing to have in su.
I have seen these last few months more and more people starting to play with more detailed and higher poly models, and i must say it looks really awesome. A lot of tools were made available that made sketchup turning another page. I use whatever tools i can use to make something work, so id say go for it, i d love to see that tool being developed.
