Not just me then, that what i couldnt find, theres not "measurements" without exploding then selecting that bar OR using the ruler (measure tool), however i have found it way quicker to just make the object again in most cases now i know i can type the figures in i need πŸ˜„

      Many Thanks

I wish SU at least would give the dimensions of a rectangle not just the area. You need to click on a bounding line to see the length of a side. The "entity" window" could be more forthcoming with information.

      Hi

Looked it over, however after playing i found the object you want to cut a hole in needs to be "exploded" THEN you can do stuff with it, however need to be carful as can destroy that object as well.

Once done then "create group" again after.

Seems to create abit of a nightmare with paintbucket but it works πŸ˜„

    • Selecting the tight object (not possible)

      Hi

Ive not been using this long, however grasped it very well (with help here), however there is one thing driving me nuts (and in Corel Draw this would be a "which object is on top of the other" type thing).

I have an image (see below) whenever i try to select the object you see in front it selects ANYTNING other than one i want, including stuff thats about 10 meters away behind it, out of sight but still under the mouse pointer (i think)....

      Whats going on there?????

      Many Thanks

      Odd selection methods!

Thats the one, thanks, cured hours of work doing it this way πŸ˜„

If by fill you mean material, if you alt click with the paint bucket it will select the material which you can then apply to more geometry.

Or am i understanding 'fill' wrong?

    • Paint Bucket "copy"

      Hi

I have a nice fill i like that i created with the paint bucket, is there a way to copy this fill from one object to another without having to create it all over again OR copy and use another object that already has it?

      Many Thanks

Remus is right. You made a component of the small rectangle then deleted it. Instead you should delete the inner face of the second rectangle BEFORE creating a component. If you then want a component to cut with, select the lines about this new hole and make a component, with "cut hole" selected. Then placing that component will cut a hole.

Can not get this to work either (same result, delete the new shape that was supposed to "cut" leaves everything else as it was before).

      Many Thanks

If you want the hole in the rectangle, just draw another rectangle on it first then select the smaller inner face and press delete πŸ‘

      Got this to work πŸ˜„

      @remus said:

The hole-cutting-component thing is more for making components that automatically cut through a single face. A good example of this sort of use is window components.

Con not get this to work...

    • Cutting holes

      Hi

This is drivng me nuts (although managed to get most of the other stuff down πŸ˜„

How on earth do i "cut a hole"...

I have a rectangle in 3D on layer0, from what i have read, i draw another rectangle on one face, make a componant with "cut hole" when i do this then delete this new rectangle i created i have a solid orginal 3D rectangle left with no hole!!!!!!!!!!!!

I have also tried this with a solid 3D object through the orginal 3D objects, still no hole!!

Must be something i am missing?

      Many Thanks

    • RE: Light sources

Hi, thanks i did think this, where is the best place for "stable" plugins, as i am only on basic i didnt think i could "export" anything.

I dont want anything to spectacular so a plugin might be a good idea, not sure how good they are though.

      Many Thanks

      Hi Ashley,

In SU, the only light source is the Sun. There is no artificial lighting at all. There are several plugins that will allow you to export your model to an external rendering applications OR are integrated into SU to the point you don't even need to leave SU to render them. There is also a plugin which will change your SU model in a way that it looks rendered with artificial lights (and more) thus allowing you to export images/animations straight from SU.

It's just too broad now to give any suggestion as some of these apps are free while others are commercial and their features can also vary a lot.

    • Light sources

      Hi

I can draw lights (as basic as long tubes) however is there a way of telling SU that it should actually give light out?

I am willing to bet you cant, however is there a plugin that will do it (so point to an object that IS a light and tell it to throw light out)?

Ive been designing a garage and need to know the lights will work with no shaddows.

      Many Thanks

    • RE: How to export sketchup physics Animation into avi?

I color everything, bricks, metal, even made the roller shutters (boarding, altered width to 100mm and made the brown much darker).

      Many Thanks

Ad far as I know, Sketchy Physics won't create scenes t5hat are needed in SU in order to export animation natively. Try some screen capture software for that - I use AutoScreenRecorder (Free version) for that and am satisfied with the results and quality so far:
      http://wisdom-soft.com/products/autoscreenrecorder_free.htm

As for colours - I guess it's just like with other SU geometry; you can use any materials with the Paint bucket tool to change the colour.

    • Basic usage

      Hi

New here, found this software by accident, however i have been using Corel Draw since about 1993 or so, using vector design and distance is second nature.

However, what i cant seem to get my head around with 7 basic is, i can create blocks (say a brick wall), i understand about creating the oblong, and extruding it, however how on earth can i type the numbers in instead of zooming in and out for 30 mins getting everything accurate like pulling walls 0.001mm, there has to be a way of just typing this stuff in from an origin location.

I have managed to move the origin to my first wall, but come on, dragging stuff to create accurate dimensions, this will drive me nuts...

Something so simple of 1 wall, 300mm wide, thick of 100mm and 2000mm high taken me about 10 mins of zooming in and out and dragging edges inside a group..... i must be missing something here.

I will add, i found the small box bottom right side but there’s no way of accessing this until you CLICK and drag the wall meaning you need to then calculate this again...

Autodesk has it (not that ive used it).

      Many Thanks
      Ashley
