Not sure why but my reply button disappeared from this window! Weird!

Hey David how are you finding LuxRender? Have they developed an interface yet?

It looks like a very promising open source application. How mate did you get from SU to Lux?

15 min and that clean, hmmm? Still a bit grubby for that time? What size did you render at?

      Very nice styles mate!!!

They really do project the hand sketched style VERY well! Well done IMHO!!!

Mate I'll throw some crits in for you! One's never sure on the SCF - many take offence and I think that's why we so so many good renders spoilt by bloom effects, no one is willing to tell anyone it looks crap!

Mate really nice job on the render!! I agree with others regarding the lights! Brodes is spot on about the rubber strip around the window, even a recess outside the plane might work.

For me the floor is a bit glossy and over bumped, and the chairs way to glossy mate!

Looks like you could have used better map to the exterior brickwork.

Given that you have likely been using the unbiased option to render this (not fam with Podium) the bulb geometry I'd imagine is throwing your render times up so high, they probably need image lighting rather that a direct emitter, though bit of PS will get you quickly back from here!

Look forward to the next from the oven!

Hey and don't forget to feel welcome to throw back crit, only way we get better! Without it we would all have blooming renders! lol! ๐Ÿ˜„

Now I just have to find a spherical filter for the GIMP.[/attachment]

Not sure a fuzzy border would be the ideal filter type! I've never tried gimp though would then suggest just transforming the wire frame layer - not sure now in Gimp though in PS its just a case of selecting all then selecting to transform or manually scale. Then scaling from the corner holding ctrl you can move the corners in or out.

Either that or just nudge the layer off position just a bit. Really only trying to add some light secondary lines to random areas so it looked like you've done quick light rough out construction first!

Mate if your keen to try some other techniques from SU, I'd love to see someone give this one a shot. Doesn't seem anyone has really thrown an attempt in the ring!

      Wow!!!

I just register to this forums and at the second post I read I just found that the famous Richard, from "Dennis Technique" is still alive and kicking!!! and I just remember that I was there at the very first post of that long, long, long thread. ๐Ÿ˜ฎ

well, back to business, I like the pencil concept and I have a few questions that I'm hoping you can answer for me ๐Ÿ˜„

      1. Do you use a personal pencil style? if so, man I'm jealous
      2. on the same subject, how do you do the pencil shading? it just looks great
      3. The extended lines are from the style? or from the famous D technique?

      Thanks in advance

      Ha thanks mate!

The extended lines in my example are in part from simple SU line extensions set to max, but also from loose lines added to the model just for the purpose of dragging out some long sketch constructions lines!

And yes mate that is a pretty close representation of how I did pencil / pen work by hand though feeling like so long ago now! 25 years of drawing can get you pretty tidy at it! I used to do a lot of old perspectives for project home building companies. Mind you I could do them not much slower than with SU now! I couldn't colour them for shit!

      Hey Kwist

Mate I think I may have updated that file this end quite a bit since the last posting on the PPB. I'll have a look and post the zip here (well if I can work out how?)

Might be a day or two - flat out like a lizard this week!

Just had a look - yes fair bit bigger now! 6.5meg of just geometry!

Hang on, I'll knock on his door.....
      ๐Ÿ˜‰

      You even woke me up!!!

Hey Rob, thanks for dragging up an old one!

Mate the two big tips I could add to your sketch which looks great BTW, is to use a layer is PS and render clouds, then reduce the blending of that layer way down! and even rub bits out, gives it that dirty page look, the one you get from dragging your hand across pencil lines whilst in action!

The other would be to use a very subtle spherical filter on a wire frame export of your model and again reduce blending weight and erase heavily! This gives the impression of early construction work, though needs to be subtle!

To my original trial I also added additional geometry to fake really long construction lines
I guess it's all about testing!

Must say mate I'm no expert, did a darn lot of these by hand years ago (like 25 years) and just tried to replicate what they looked like then! Much more accurate now though! ๐Ÿ˜„

    • RE: Yet another depressing image of doors

Mate I agree with Kwist here that the door shadow are confusing! The centre door handle is really showing the use of multiple emitters with multiple shadow casts!

I like the level of detail!! I like this image too, has a nice disturbing emotion attached as durant suggested ( I think ๐Ÿ˜„ )!

I think your using modo now hey? Can you hide the foreground emitter from reflections? I know you can in maxwell!

Mate here is a thread from the maxwell forum about light fall off that you may find very interesting and informative!

      Hey dave it looks great!

If you were to do just as JPG you could have done it in PS pretty quickly and then with some folding near the buttons!

Haven't used soap skin (or any other rubies for that matter) but when I look at what you and pete do with them I realise I'm dragging the chain!

Good to see your still hard at it mate!

Stinkie: Looking again I think you are right about the ceiling crop, leave as is. I do really like this image.

Can't wait till you put all these in a gallery thread!!! Maybe you could make up a presentation book on Issuu.com with a subtle layout to suit!! Wanting more mate!

Did anyone else on these forums manage to produce anything with the Crysis engine from sketchup models?

      yes sure,

      last year i did it via dwg-export -> 3dsmax -> sandbox
      result: picture1

by now i use zapwizzards way by the use of the collada converter.
      result: picture2

still i wish sketchup would support better exports in different formats
or a tool that helps optimizing export for cryengine more easily.
collada is still not meant to be a su->ce2 converter...

      cheers

Mate are you saying in those last two scenes the models could be exported from SU via collada to ce2?

I'll have to read through zap's method again - I really have a problem with too much tech talk, I'll have to try and dumb it down!

    • RE: Recent Work and the Dreaded Night Shot :::

      Mate both shots look amazing!

      Few comments for your first night shot (well done by the way);

      1. The foreground for me looks a little low on lighting,
      2. Some stair side lighting looks appropriate,
      3. The cobbles in the night shot for some reason looks way over bumped / displaced,
      4. The interior lighting just seems a bit (and just a bit) to white or it could be just a tad too intense!

      Amazing stuff mate!

Reminds me of the time I flew from Australia to the UK to watch the aust v england cricket test match! I got off the plane with poor balance as my ear drums were inflamed and didn't know what was going on with my groin but could hardly walk. So went straight to the doctors.

After examining my groin he said we'll probably have to take your testicles - I got up walked out and slammed the door - "Mate your joking those test tickets cost me a fortune not even to mention that 20 hour flight"!
