What OS? I think it works on Snow Leopard but not those previous. They are however working on a fix for the earlier version.

RE: Speak2CAD
My intent here is mostly for those who do not have use of one or both of their hands/arms. Perhaps it is as simple as Dragon Naturally Speaking??? If Dean Kaemen can engineer the DARPA arm...someone must be playing with this voice stuff in Sketchup. (Finally did my first Segway tour....am now officially a nerd)

Speak2CAD
Is anyone using Speak2CAD for Sketchup (or even Autocad). Am curious of your experiences using it for Sketchup or even Autocad.

RE: Student robotics challenge
Did the students also make the actual robot?

RE: Calculating Weight
I too am interested in this thread and wonder if in fact much of what is necessary is in the pro version. Wasn't the solid modeling a bit more enhanced. For those who are not boat designers, remember back to "are you smarter than a 5th grader" (or forward to parents out there) that density is mass per volume and unit weight is weight per volume (or density multiplied by "little g"). It would seem to me that "volume" must be stored somewhere for each group...perhaps not. Some sort of density number is stored in SP (in the UI screen) though I think all of those models made stable by adding hidden counterweights indicate that it might not be as friendly as it should be. I have noticed that SP doesn't deal with conservation of rotational momentum as it should (think Greg Louganis).

RE: Sp Wiki=Out of date/abandoned?
Chris has been kind of quiet...I hope all is well. I too think that, though out of date, the wiki still does fulfill a purpose. The power in SP32 really does come from the scripting and slight well timed inputs and examples from people on this site. I presume that Sketchy Physics is kind of a side job for its creators but I sense a powerful tool emerging; SPhysics only seems so hard cause sketchup itself is so intuitive.

RE: Truck & trailer application?
I also would suggest looking at Ruby (ya eventually gotta go there with SP or you miss half the fun), particularly Martin Reinhardt's book.

RE: Pause a simulation...open and close a file...continue?
I'm not really sure but I think it is for multiperson input into a simple model...for which my wife says we have Second Life. For me, who has been highly involved in K-12 and Technical College Education...I see it as a way of sucking a group of people into a multi-person environment which has controls (Ruby) that they can fathom. It relies I would say on their all having access to the same part of the cloud but I presume that leaping to the lat long generated by their phones is not too far....(google docs I presume).
If you want something more solid I guess it would be taking output from PLC or other emulator programs before actually making the hard connect to the machine. I will post a badly programmed model the first chance I get. For now I have 15 students and they each will get a box that they can make giggle and change color when it it their turn to tell me what happens when they transform a shape by e^(ipi).
Any other uses ideas...particularly with how to poll off the web...would be greatly appreciated.

RE: Pause a simulation...open and close a file...continue?
You may be Mr. K....but you are Mr. OK by me. Hope I can pay it forward in the future. The power of this to generate multiple input into a model is mindboggling. A K of thanks.

RE: Pause a simulation...open and close a file...continue?
Very cool stuff. Thank you. However I am still having issues with making it work within
Sketchy Physics. I would guess that the same IO.read should work on an intermittent basis in the ontick but I am having no luck. -
Pause a simulation...open and close a file...continue?
I am trying to revive this topic as a way of passing changing variables into a sketchy physics simulation. Let's say there is some external program that will check the color of the shirt I am wearing right now (when the right now changes every 15 seconds) and then update a flat ascii file with the name of the color. Is there a way to poll that file every 15 seconds and then have SP3.2 use that color value (or velocity...or position)?

RE: Problem with 3.2 install on Windows
That is just a glitch...Chris hasn't made the change in the logline yet.
Enjoy

RE: Pipe/tube
On a semi related link I noticed on the model below that block defined as static meshes performed slightly
differently than those defined as boxes that were made static. The latter seems to better describe reality. This model was done with SP32.

RE: Call to action! Help update maps of Southern Sudan
With the preliminary election results posted I have seen the first photography of the
Sudan Sentinel Project in the press. (kind of buried considering all that is occurring in
Tunisia and Egypt. For those following this thread here is a good place to help keep
track of the overall picture. -
RE: Complex numbers and other libraries
I think so. Complex(10,2) should yield 10 + 2i. In ruby 1.9.2 it is a Class with a parent being numeric. If it sounds like I don't know what I'm talking about its cause I don't know what I'm talking about....However Complex numbers are a part of the TI83 Calculator Basic but not a standard function in Google Docs Spreadsheets.
Thanks for your great work..

Complex numbers and other libraries
Can anyone tell me how to use other ruby libraries like the complex number functions in the Ruby in Sketchup? Khalid at http://www.betterexplained.com has rocked my world and has got me scrambling to apply euler's formula to simple animation as a teaching tool. All of you wizards out there can take this as a general question about other libraries as well. Thanks heaps.

RE: Pipe/tube
If you would like to make a "moving tube" you need to "group" together some "boxes" that run the length of the pipe, have a thickness equal to the pipe wall thickness, and are rotate arrayed around the centerline (spring line??) of the pipe. I would guess that the trigonometry of all this means that the inside corners should match meaning that the angle between each "Plank" will be ((the number of planks-2)* 180)/number of planks.
"Connecting" the planks can be done either by grouping them or using joints. The second is probably much easier done now is SP32. If anyone has a teaching video on this please put it out here....if not I'll dig into my own files and post.

RE: SketchyPhysics3.2 (Dec 2)
Spent a few minutes Christmas morning installing SP3.2 on my triplet nephew's Macbook with SnowLeopard and it worked nicely...I guess it is time to upgrade to snow leopard....Adapt or perish I guess.

RE: SketchyPhysics3.2 (Dec 2)
It could be an issue with my machine so I will get back to you after I have tried an install on a few other machines and then send some examples if it persists. Good luck with the Apple side. I see a confluence of mystical powers to higher math and modeling understanding when you can mix Apple Grapher with SP....(even though I know the original Apple Grapher is now Pacific T. Cheers!
