@ Dave, I've been using the default style that the program set up when it was installed. Until now, SU was a screw around program, something to play with. I started using it to help boy scouts get their architecture merit badge. A free program that would do the basics to get them by. Most of them use it in school as well as other projects they have. Not that long ago, 1 of the boys wanted to draw up a yurts for his merit badge. I opened AutoCad (2010) and showed he the files I had on yurts and gave him a copy of the pdf (if anybody wants me to upload it, just ask). Then for kicks, I did a (primitive/ basic shape) yurts. Well I was shown a few trick on how to draw it from Bran. The next few nights, I started to redesign the door frame and got something that worked (all in AC). Then I went back and redid the primitive yurts that I started with. Which I'm up loading. I can safely say that in the last week, I've easily double my knowledge of SU, triple my aggravation, and practiced my french (slang for cussing like a sailor) as much as when I'm forging. I own most of that to you. So a major Thank You again. I have since decided to learn how to use SU as a real program and not just some screw around toy to play with and that's why I'm here at the forum.

RE: Large circular lattice work
@ Dave, I think I did say no to softening edges and I might have hidden on. I remember turning it on for something and might need to turn it off again. Plus after posting I noticed the back is open. So I'll be trying to do it different ways till I figure out what it does.
On the door, so I forgot to save after recoloring, That was taken from a file I did a complete build up with over 50 different steps and color ideas. I started with the basic frame and grouped, add more parts and group. So on and so on. It kind of look like a tutorial in a way. An OLD habit for working out ideas. I normally do work in monochrome, and I'm not sure you mean by "work with a style that does not have endpoints turned on" but I will look into that. I had no idea that grouping like that make editing and correcting more difficult. It's just easier for me when I'm roughing out ideas. Guess I need to start using components more. Thanks again.

RE: Large circular lattice work
@ Dave, OK I got something right and I'm stooping till I know what I should do. I got the extrude to work.
But it has the stitch pattern that yours does not. Do I need to smooth or did I do something wrong? Here's the file for the door. The only difference between the 12, 14, or 16' yurts is the door wings. Some of the eye bolts are off size, which I'm planning on fixing later. But as you can see, the door is the most complicated part of the build. The khana or wall are just time consuming. And Pilou if you want a V6, let me know.

RE: Large circular lattice work
@ Pilou, I have been having the worst luck with Shape Bender. I've gotten a single slat to bend, but not much more. And I don't mind post a different version of file if it helps people to learn. But something tells me the guys (your friends) are not going to stop kidding you about it.
@ Dave, besides felling like an idiot, I'm still having problems. But I'm not giving up yet. I'm figuring out extrude edge by rail. Found a few pages that help explain it. Which help explain what I messed up before. If I can get it tonight, then I'll ask more questions.

RE: Large circular lattice work
@Pilou, That's what I thought I did. But I could have screwed up something that easy considering. So let's try it 1 more time.

RE: Large circular lattice work
Well my attempt didn't pan out. I got the lines drawn, but couldn't get a face on the drawing. I got Tig's to work, but I had a few problems there as well. With the small radius used in this yurt size, the slats do bend and I couldn't figure out a way to get the spacing right. After learning where to find draw helix, I figured out the correct inputs and got to step 4 without any problems. On step 5, Dave talks about "dividing those lines into three segments", not sure which lines that means. I thought it was the helix lines, but that didn't work. Tried the short line (didn't make sense, but what the 'ell), the only way I could get a face was to "stitch" I think you guys call it. Drawing smaller triangles to form a face. Did I do something wrong?

RE: Large circular lattice work
@ Dave, I might have been using SU for about 2 years now, but I still have a lot to learn. I just learned about plug-in 2+weeks ago and as you can see, I'm new to the forum. But I didn't know where to look to see that yes it's loaded into SU. So after I finish my next attempt at a slat, I'll start working on that plug-in and figure it out. I think I've figured out a way to do a slat with all native tools.
@ Pilou, Sorry I thought it would work and if I had tried this 3 weeks earlier, it would still be in Ver 6. I just upgraded to Ver 8. Great picture of the yak. I know how Dave feels about camping. I feel the same at times.
@ Gaieus, nice to see you again.
@ Tig, love your forum name, my favorite way to weld. I just saw a vid on Utube from a guy in Japan doing a spring. Which gave me some good ideas to try. Which I'm about half way through now. I came back to double check how Dave did his ends and 'olly zhit I got tagged. I'll be going back over your post, hopefully after my current attempt pays off and not to bale me out of trouble.
I want to thank all you guys for your help. It's really help to cut down my learning curve. I hope you all stick around for the next project, A rapier hilt. I've attached a pic of 2 that are important to me. The one on the right is the 1st hilt I did that balanced out right and taught me how balancing works. The one on the left, I did well going through postate cancer treatment. It gave me something positive to focus on.

RE: Large circular lattice work
Dave I did find it through a forum search, had to add .rd and it showed up. Moved it to the plug-in folder and "nothing". So I'm uploading 2 files, 1 on ver8, 1 on ver6 for Polou. This is the file I tried to use with Shape Bender. Maybe you guys can see what I'm doing wrong.

RE: Large circular lattice work
Pilou, I've tried Shape Bender. I had the complete wall drawn out, flipped to vertical, had matching lines, straight to arch (with in .25") tried as components, component, as group, as just made group, and every time the program (SU) locked up. I know Chris did a 9 meg car with this and the wall section is NO WHERE near 9 meg. I thought I had it made and after 4 nights of fighting it, I decided to ask people here how they'd do it.
Dave, THANK YOU! I would have never thought of using the helix, I've been looking for the plug-in but got side tracked checking out tutorials by sdmitch and still have to find it.
I have built 2 of these yurts, a 12' and 14'. But I never did like how the door fit. To be blunt, I didn't like the 1 size fits all crown and the roof canvas detail either. After camping with the 12' for 1 year. There was 2 things that stuck out the most, it was 2 small for what I was doing and I hated the door. With both those yurts gone (sold off), I was thinking of building another 1, but not till I had redesigned the door (done) and then I just HAD to draw it out exactly as I wanted to build it (more gray hairs, lol). When I get it done, I'll upload the files so you can check it out.
If anybody has any other ways of doing it, I'd still love to see how you'd draw it.

RE: Large circular lattice work
How the bloody 'ell did you do that!!!!! That's it.
Now I know I need to learn this program better.
Please, a detailed explanation. Thanks Dave, that's great work.

RE: Large circular lattice work
Let's see how this works,
I didn't have a pic of the frame work, but found this on the web.
It's from this web site

Large circular lattice work
Hi guys, my name is Cliff. I've been a casual SU user for about 2 years now. An early project I started was a 14' Yurts or Ger. The 1st go round I spent a couple of months trying different way to draw the Khana (wall) of the yurt. So what it is, is a large lattice work wrapped around a circle. Each piece of the wall is 1.5"x.25" that's 96" long. There are about 60 of these pieces, bolted together so there collapsible, but when standing to make the tent, are at right angles to each other. The tent is based off of plans from a pdf called "yurt_construction_document.pdf", I'm sure it's still out on the web somewhere. I've just redesigned the door frame and had to redo a few rafters to make the door work. So now I want to tackle the last big head ache, the walls.
I'm hoping some of you guys who have forgotten more about SU then I have learned can give me some idea about how to draw this. I've checked out the warehouse and the best example had 2-d planes for the lattice. I want to try to do it with 3-d pieces. I've downloaded a plug-in by Fredo6 that allows me to draw on curved surfaces, but I'm having troubles with it as well. I've also tried Chris's Shape Bender, but it locks up the program every time I've tried it. If I need another plug-in, learn to use Fredo6's or Chris's plug-in better, or it can't be done. That's what I'm hoping to find out.
Thanks

RE: A Welcome Message to New SketchUcation Members
Well my 2 biggest problems where the eye bolts or eye hook bolts as you might know them by. That took a few days to figure out and get close to right. There still not perfect, but there close enough for the drawing. The 2nd was the roof covering. The biggest problem there was making sure every thing was lined up with the main circle and getting all the rafter in plane. The follow me tool didn't like the over hang of the rafters so I had to do it in 2 passes. Even after making sure the profile was in plane.
In the future I want to do the Khana or wall section. I've gone to the warehouse to see how other people have done it. But it not what I want to do. They've used a flat 2-d surface, which I've thought of a couple of way I might be able to do. But the walls are like a large lattice or baby gate, just in case your not sure how a yurts (or ger) is made. I've been thinking that if I build the wall on the flat, rise it vertical and use a follow line command (not sure if SU has that command), not sure if follow me will do that or if I did something wrong. But that's my next big problem solving mission for SU. Since the boys only use SU and I hardly used SU in the past, I just need to start using it more, like with the yurts project. I started it in AutoCad, then 3-d it in SU. SU has taught me how to do things in AC 3-d better, both are primitives so they do work similar in some ways. I've done very little 3-d in AC or Reveit since I'm used to working 2-d on paper. I still love sitting behind the drafting board drawing things out the old fashion way. Old habits die hard.

RE: A Welcome Message to New SketchUcation Members
I had just redesigned a door for a 14' camping yurts (old SCA design) then finished figuring out the rest of the modifications to the yurts to make it work better, and 1 of the boys shows me 2 plug-ins that would have made things "WAY" easier then doing it with the standard software.
I know what you mean about the warehouse. I've uploaded a couple of solar power components and I should go back and redo them.

RE: A Welcome Message to New SketchUcation Members
I've been using SketchUp for almost 2 years now. I got started by helping Boy Scouts use it to get their architectural merit badge. I've used AutoCad since the stone ages and have a BS in architecture. I've used Solidworks for a few projects. SketchUp has been more a fool around program until the boys started showing me things they've learned from friends and in school. So it's time for me to learn how to use the program better, so I can keep up with the boys. I found this site well researching problems with loading Fredoscale (still looking for the fix) and found out there's more to the program then I 1st thought.
