We did have an earthquake last night, though. 5.2 on the Richter scale
Alan could you feel that in Liverpool? We could feel it here in Hull, The whole house shook for about a minute. Overall here I think there were a few damaged chimneys but nothing serious. Americans I know you get alot of tremors but the UK only get one every 20 years so it was quite exciting.
). There are plenty of SU books and the best tutorials are here at sketchucation.Did anyone ever try SoftCad? There are 3 flavours SoftCAD, APC Draft and Architech PC. Never has a program looked so simple but actually been so complicated.
http://www.softcad.com/indexeuro.asp?selmenu=&smenu=&ssmenu=&page=gallery/galeries3d.asp
I only tried Softcad, I can't say that it's terrible as I never managed to draw anything with it, but my gut instinct is that it is probably a donkey.
Secondly, for complexity over reason, it would be unfair not to give Blender at least an honourable mention.
that's great, you should have a go at modelling your son's house design - far right
I love coffee, in my old job, we lived on it. Since I left that job I can't drink it any more because when I wasn't having 4 or 5 cups a day I started to get migraines. I think I was getting withdrawal sympytoms. So I went cold turkey.
The case will have to be all tied up first before you post the models. Under Uk law at least, if you circulate case documents outside the court prior to the verdict (sub-judice)you will be in breach of the law.

If i were you I would just create an dimensionally accurate SU model.
Surely if there is a chance that the re-cronstruction will be criticised, forget the rendering, don't be artistic, just be as accurate as possible.
Could you present your model in court in Sketchup? That way it can be rotated.
the fish thing is a logo I did for a theatre company in Brighton called Rare Breed. I just mashed together 2 photos in photoshop.

I really like the style. The bald guy looks a bit like me. Did you use the charcoal sketch filter on Obama in Photoshop?. I might try doing this. Thanks
This is a link to a really good blog I look at by some phd students in London. Amongst other things they do some cool stuff with "augmented reality" You have to see it to understand it, but the effect is a virtual "real" model.

All the videos are good but watch the first one and then scroll down to the one titled "3d camera matching - You tube". If you want to have a go, the software is free from this site.

There is a tutorial here

I think im going to have to make a bit of stand for vista. I really dont find it that bad, definately an improvement on XP, at least in my opinion.
Vista isn't terrible, but its Microsoft's attitude of "yeah vista won't do that, accept it" that annoys me.
Vista made most of my software, (which was only a few years old) obsolete. I've got a lovely new machine but I can do less on it than I could on my old machine that runs xp. Only Microsoft could survive the release of a product that is so restrictive.
The most positive thing that has come out of me using Vista is that I've made an effort to find free software because I can't afford loads of new apps. My 5 yr old Ms Office wouldn't work on Vista so I installed Open Office which is superb, reads and writes Ms formats and its free.
Also I've started experimenting with linux. If you want to see a well designed O.S. look at ubuntu or dream linux. I think Microsoft will soon have serious competition from the open source arena.
I don't know about the U.S., but you'd be lucky to get paid by a brand for doing this in the UK. Also, you should get the brands permission before duplicating their logo

I for one would hate it when 3dwarehouse would be filled with 'locked' geometry, as it would be against the whole concept of sharing ....
I don't want to high jack this thread but can I make a point on the the subject of copyright? I'm all for sharing, but copyright in what context?
I have been concerned for some time that the 3d warehouse policy is unclear. What does it refer to, the SU model or the design content?
The terms of service document at http://www.google.com/intl/en/sketchup/3dwh/tos.html says:
@unknownuser said:
Google claims no ownership or control over any Content submitted, posted or displayed by you on or through the 3D Warehouse. You or a third party licensor, as appropriate, retain all patent, trademark and copyright to any Content you submit, post or display on or through the 3D Warehouse and you are responsible for protecting those rights, as appropriate.
Sounds ok but the next line says:
@unknownuser said:
By submitting, posting or displaying Content through the 3D Warehouse, you grant Google and its end users a worldwide, royalty-free, non-exclusive, perpetual license to exercise the rights in the Content, as stated below:
to reproduce the Content;
to create and reproduce derivative works of the Content;
to display publicly and distribute copies of the Content;
to display publicly and distribute copies of derivative works of the content.
Furthermore, for the avoidance of doubt, Google reserves, and you grant Google, the right to syndicate Content submitted, posted or displayed by you on or through the 3D Warehouse and use that Content in connection with any of the services offered by Google. Notwithstanding the above, end users may not aggregate the Content obtained from the 3D Warehouse for redistribution,...........
What does that last phrase "aggregate" mean? Does that mean that the model cannot be turned into a real world object or does it mean something else?
I'm all for sharing but this should be clearer. As I understand it, a copyright certificate usually only protects a design in its country of origin. An international design patent is needed to stop manufacture somewhere else. But I think even this is jeopardised by circulating the design prior to manufacture.
Obviously this doesn't apply to the majority of models in the 3DW that are of generic things that already exist, or the design elements are site specific so they wouldn't have a transferable real world value. But bespoke furniture is regularly posted. I think it's great that people want to share their creations. But I'm concerned that naive people, maybe design students, are posting work there with no idea that the design (not the model) could have a financial value that they are giving up.
Some clarification would be nice.
Nice model Mike. It's deceptive, at first it looks like a simple model but I bet it took quite a bit of figuring out.I've just opened the groups but it's not clear what your workflow was, perhaps you could explain?
My awful rendering doesn't do this nice model justice. Furniture by George http://sketchup.google.com/3dwarehouse/search?uq=01316587199403152947
