The red and white column is what I ended up with after my happy accident the first time, and the second time, this is as far as I can get.

RE: Spiral help please
I had the same problem but when I did a double (maybe it was a triple click?) on the line I then selected the entire line. I also tried to repeat what I had done before to get the "spirals" in the column to act as one face, but this time I still ended up with the situation you are describing. I have no clue what I did the first time to get it to work.
No no no, nothing stupid about asking questions, and in addition - that distinction belongs to me. Hey - it's the only claim I have to fame. I have been using SketchUp since version 8 - about what... 3 or 4 years? Still clueless. Tomorrow is another day however, and as said before I NEVER give up! If I come up with the answer, I shall be sure to post my own kindergarten explanation of the process. I don't mind stating that I am quite happy to have people dumb it down for me as they say, so that I can get that Aha moment. I trust that if you come across the solution you will also share it with me and again - feel free to explain as though I just landed from the Andromeda Galaxy.
PS - Just read Box's reply, but the first time I got it work I did not do any of that, and yet it worked exactly as it did in the Youtube tut. If only I could go back and recreate what I did.

RE: Spiral help please
I was just about to write back to ntxdave, and tell him that I had found the answer, which was to just "select all" and then explode. Hope you are proud of me Box - I figured it out all by myself.

Installed and experimenting, but I am not understanding the 5 entities? It worked with the component, but of course that is not the look I am going for, the other one is, and when I follow what you did, I get nothing ? -
RE: Spiral help please
My exact question - but after having been such a pain all day I was too embarrassed to ask that question as well. Thank you for asking it for me.

RE: Spiral help please
Very interesting and I will definitely look into it. What I liked about Mr. Raupp's model was the ability to obtain so many "looks" with his spiral. I noticed this ruby said for Sketchup 4, but I am sure it must work in 14 for you to have recommended it. Merci.

RE: Spiral help please
I actually have both installed and was browsing though them yesterday. And now that I have got as far as the "candy cane" stage of the model, and as soon as I can figure out what "In einzeltelle auflosen" (Google translate told me it meant "dissolve in retail hiring" means, so that I can divide what is a solid face into the segments as he has them - I will be good to go!
Not without a cup of tea,,, -
RE: Spiral help please
I DID IT! I DID IT! I DID IT! Glory Hallelujah!! It only took two days...
Box (or is it Mr. Box?) you are a champion! This has always been my problem. I registered for SU classes twice at the nearby college, and on both occasions just like the war that no one attended, they were cancelled due to lack of interest. I have therefore had to resort to Youtube and Lynda.com and trial and error (errors costing me lots of trials...) to learn the little that I know. Having been nominated on several occasions for Math Moron of the year, that does not help. But thanks to people like yourself, who take the time out of your day to help the helpless, I shall prevail, and I never give up. THANK YOU SO MUCH. Now let's see if I can understand where he went from there.

RE: Spiral help please
Nooooo... actually because I am so dreadful and usually just shop the warehouse for models that I need, I did have some wonderful ruby scripts that I found on s'Mustard. When I switched from SU8 to SU14 however, none of them worked? Move to origin, hip roof, sphere etc. I looked though the list again yesterday hoping to find some updated versions to some of these ruby scripts, but without much luck. I keep telling myself that if I keep on depending on the warehouse for models that I need, that I will never get any better, but when a drawing needs to be finished and SU is only the first step and then on to Photoshop, and the clients are drumming their fingers, any time that I can save is immeasurable. Actually - before submitting this post, I went into my library to check, and even though I know I migrated them over, none of them are showing up in the folder. Curiouser and curiouser. It's a dreadful thing being a bear of little brain.

RE: Spiral help please
I'll get thisIf it kills me! - and probably you... Yes - looking at the clip again I can see what I should have done. I am an atrocious SU user though I try, and commit the terrible sin of eyeballing stuff too often and it shows. I did not take into consideration the 24 segments in the circle. Back to the drawing board and I cannot THANK YOU enough for your help and patience. I shan't disappear into the sunset without another thank you once I succeed, and succeed I will d--mn it!
And will return to let you know of my nomination to the SU Hall of Fame.
Cheers! -
RE: Spiral help please
Helix.movThank God for people with patience. I have managed to get this far. So far so good... but, and I am guessing it is just maybe that I am grabbing the array in the wrong place, when I move (Option for me on a Mac) the array, it is still not lining up? Sigh... (Pardon the drifting off the blue axis)
-
RE: Spiral help please
Oh I got all of that. It was not the array that was the problem, it was that when I copied the array and moved it up on the blue axis it did not line up? Guess I'll try it again...

Spiral help please
Top o' the morning, and another stupid question please.
Having found the perfect tutorial on creating an "orange peel" wrap for my event renders, (see photo attached) by Kito Raupp https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pNTetL3Udkc%26amp;list=UUqlqnVJT4qTJdJbnCU0y4QQ, and after having watched it at least ten times, and since there is no audio to the tutorial (Unless Herr Raupp speaks English there would have been a problem anyway since "Ich spreche kein Deutsch". Thank you Google translate ) I cannot for the life of me figure out what he did to get the copy of the original row of lines to match up when copied. His VCB is not visible in the tutorial, and the entire clip is very fast. Obviously he rotated it, but how and by how much just left me sitting here feeling mightily frustrated!
Are there any kind souls out there who can put me out of my misery please?

RE: Yosemite? Atos? SketchUp? Aaaargh!
You are absolutely correct, and I only did it because as mentioned, the beta that I knew a few people had installed worked well. Normally I would wait at least three months, but no point crying over spilt milk now, so I will just have to wait for the "fix." It is frustrating though, as even my attachment tamer (images sent from a Mac to a PC are embedded in most cases) and which is my life line, is now non-functional and I shall have to wait for the developer, who is also really marvellous about keeping up, to release the latest version. In the meantime every file that I send to my employers and clients on PC's I have to upload to Dropbox, regardless of the size. But... I digress... this is a forum about SketchUp not Apple's Yosemite.

RE: Yosemite? Atos? SketchUp? Aaaargh!
Sorry - I should have updated my info. I am not using 8 but SU Make. And believe me when I say that it is all Apple's fault.
To date on the Apple forum re Yosemite and it's issues, there have been 88,083 (yes thousand) views, and at last look 730 comments. I am not alone, everyone is having the same problems, and no sign of a mea culpa anywhere from Apple.
No one had mentioned SketchUp anywhere though, and I had never received that Atos error message before in all my years of using SketchUp. We (the Apple Forum members) would love to be able to roll back to Mavericks. I would give anything to be able to do that, but since I had not backed up my computer (just my files) prior to installing Yosemite, having been told by a beta user that it was working just fine, there appears according to what I have read, no way to do that. Nothing to do other than to sit and wait and hope that Apple comes out with a fix before the end of the year.

Yosemite? Atos? SketchUp? Aaaargh!
Good morning,
Like an idiot, and only because I knew someone who had installed the beta and had no problems, I upgraded (bad choice of a word) to OSX Yosemite a couple days after its launch. I am sure you have been following the posts as to its many and assorted problems. The worst for me being kicked off of the internet every three minutes, and which makes working virtually impossible. I have been on the verge of tears many a day.
Another problem that I have noticed, is that on attempting to export a render from SketchUp and using LightUp, I keep getting a message from something called "Atos" requesting permission to debug. Regardless of whether I say yes or cancel, SketchUp crashes.
I was about to write the developer of LightUp who is unbelievably helpful, to ask if he thought it was a LightUp problem, and your good-selves as to whether it could be SketchUp issue, but decided instead to Google the word Atos to see if I could find out what it was? Apparently, and I did not read the entire article, it is something connected to Apple's operating system, and so therefore there is now one other "fail" to add to the entire Yosemite nightmare.
Is there anything that I can do to get around this problem when using SketchUp, or am I just going to have to be very very sure to save every two seconds and prior to exporting my render. Not that I don't usually, but when I am pressed for time I do sometimes forget.
Thank you, and sorry for the long explanation.

RE: Camera Views Toolbar with SketchUp Make
Just wait a while - don't write it off altogether. My dearest nephew (for whom I work) might be a brilliant event designer, but he is rather hopeless with his computer and ignores upgrades to the point where none of his apps work anymore being all incompatible, or he can't open files from clients, and then he screams for help and we go to find that he is for example still using Snow Leopard, and... has ignored all requests to update his OSX.
It might as said be a bit of a nuisance, but they always work it out in the end. Just wish they could get it right from the beginning. To be honest, the only advantage I see to this upgrade is a better (according to Apple) integration of information between all devices and increased icloud capability. We shall see...

RE: Camera Views Toolbar with SketchUp Make
And aside from the fact that I am currently considering how to strangle, drown and physically pummel Yosemite into the ground, (lots of issues and I should have known better than to upgrade too soon) I do love my Mac.

RE: Camera Views Toolbar with SketchUp Make
That is exactly what I needed, but (just plain daft I am) I was looking at "View - Tool Palettes" and not reading down to the bottom with "View - Customise Toolbar. Mea culpa - thank you very much.
