    • Image not snapping?

      Hello helpful people πŸ˜„

Question of the morning please. I have noticed since moving over to SU 2014, that when I import an image onto a face (usually a rectangle) in SU, that previously it would snap to fit the area, and sometimes the ratio would be wrong and I would have to go back to Photoshop and resize my image to fit and then import it again, but even if the first time the ratio was incorrect and a portion of the image was lost, it still snapped to fit the rectangle.

Now when I import an image ( and I have to do that ALOT) it snaps to the first corner, but then just keeps going and falls off the rectangle at the other end. I don't understand what I am not doing or what has changed?

Attached are two examples. The image with David Beckham done in SU 8 worked just fine and snapped as expected. The image with the basketball did not. The larger size is where it ended when released, and the smaller size was the rectangle it was supposed to snap to ??? I am importing as an "image" not a "texture."

      Thank you.

    • RE: Reversed Text on Material

Unbelievable - and a loud responding DUH! Although I had tried that - but on reversing the opposite was face was blank. However... on then applying the material again, this time it was facing the correct way around. Dave to the rescue again! I swear - every time I think I better just take up making chocolate cakes or something, Dave comes to the rescue πŸ˜„
      Is it a bird? Is it a plane? Noooo - it's a Dave! πŸ˜„

Please - why when I use an image with text on a surface does it place as a mirror image?
      Thank you.

Problem... that's my name - "No brain". I tried that, but even the orientation of the material is wrong. I will just keep on trying. At some point I'll figure it out I hope, or if not, (tempus fugit) I will just wait until I take into Photoshop and fix it there.
      Thank you.

PS - Tried using the context menu of, Texture > Position, and it kind of worked, but I am sure there is a better way.

    • Semi opaque/transparent image import

      Helloooo dear SketchUcation forum members!

Here's hoping you all had a marvellous Xmas. My question of the day is...

I am building a model into which I would like to apply a "transfer" for want of a better word, to a clear plexi wall. I was hoping not to apply the image as a material, as getting the ratio right always seems to be a problem. I would prefer to "import" the image onto the wall as in that way I am guaranteed of a nice fit. Problem here is how do I adjust the transparency of an imported image?

I was thinking that if it was on a separate layer that a la Photoshop that layer's transparency could be reduced ???

Hoping that smarter and more experienced users will be able to tell me how to do this. Attaching two screen shots of the model (still in its early stages), pointing out the area I am hoping to make transparent. It is the wall that looks like stripes that you see at the right, and to which I tried to apply the image as a material with those disastrous results.

      Thank you πŸ˜„

      Hi ely862me.

Sorry, gave it a rest last night to watch a little television. I am going back to it today though. Call me stubborn, but I feel the need to get it done exactly as in the tutorial, not with any workarounds, not that they don't work, and not that I am not eternally grateful for any and all help.

Uploading the model here that did work for some reason for dissection, and I look forward to hearing the analysis, critiques and comments.

This has actually been wonderful seeing so many people coming together on an enigma for two of us.

Thanks to all for the huge effort and interest.

The red and white column is what I ended up with after my happy accident the first time, and the second time, this is as far as I can get.

I had the same problem but when I did a double (maybe it was a triple click?) on the line I then selected the entire line. I also tried to repeat what I had done before to get the "spirals" in the column to act as one face, but this time I still ended up with the situation you are describing. I have no clue what I did the first time to get it to work.

No no no, nothing stupid about asking questions, and in addition - that distinction belongs to me. Hey - it's the only claim I have to fame. I have been using SketchUp since version 8 - about what... 3 or 4 years? Still clueless. Tomorrow is another day however, and as said before I NEVER give up! If I come up with the answer, I shall be sure to post my own kindergarten explanation of the process. I don't mind stating that I am quite happy to have people dumb it down for me as they say, so that I can get that Aha moment. I trust that if you come across the solution you will also share it with me and again - feel free to explain as though I just landed from the Andromeda Galaxy.

PS - Just read Box's reply, but the first time I got it work I did not do any of that, and yet it worked exactly as it did in the Youtube tut. If only I could go back and recreate what I did.

I was just about to write back to ntxdave, and tell him that I had found the answer, which was to just "select all" and then explode. Hope you are proud of me Box - I figured it out all by myself.

Installed and experimenting, but I am not understanding the 5 entities? It worked with the component, but of course that is not the look I am going for, the other one is, and when I follow what you did, I get nothing ?

Very interesting and I will definitely look into it. What I liked about Mr. Raupp's model was the ability to obtain so many "looks" with his spiral. I noticed this ruby said for Sketchup 4, but I am sure it must work in 14 for you to have recommended it. Merci.

I actually have both installed and was browsing though them yesterday. And now that I have got as far as the "candy cane" stage of the model, and as soon as I can figure out what "In einzeltelle auflosen" (Google translate told me it meant "dissolve in retail hiring" πŸ˜† means, so that I can divide what is a solid face into the segments as he has them - I will be good to go!

I DID IT! I DID IT! I DID IT! Glory Hallelujah!! It only took two days...

Box (or is it Mr. Box?) you are a champion! This has always been my problem. I registered for SU classes twice at the nearby college, and on both occasions just like the war that no one attended, they were cancelled due to lack of interest. I have therefore had to resort to Youtube and Lynda.com and trial and error (errors costing me lots of trials...) to learn the little that I know. Having been nominated on several occasions for Math Moron of the year, that does not help. But thanks to people like yourself, who take the time out of your day to help the helpless, I shall prevail, and I never give up. THANK YOU SO MUCH. Now let's see if I can understand where he went from there. πŸ˜„

Nooooo... actually because I am so dreadful and usually just shop the warehouse for models that I need, I did have some wonderful ruby scripts that I found on s'Mustard. When I switched from SU8 to SU14 however, none of them worked? Move to origin, hip roof, sphere etc. I looked though the list again yesterday hoping to find some updated versions to some of these ruby scripts, but without much luck. I keep telling myself that if I keep on depending on the warehouse for models that I need, that I will never get any better, but when a drawing needs to be finished and SU is only the first step and then on to Photoshop, and the clients are drumming their fingers, any time that I can save is immeasurable. Actually - before submitting this post, I went into my library to check, and even though I know I migrated them over, none of them are showing up in the folder. Curiouser and curiouser. It's a dreadful thing being a bear of little brain. πŸ˜„

I'll get thisIf it kills me! - and probably you... Yes - looking at the clip again I can see what I should have done. I am an atrocious SU user though I try, and commit the terrible sin of eyeballing stuff too often and it shows. I did not take into consideration the 24 segments in the circle. Back to the drawing board and I cannot THANK YOU enough for your help and patience. I shan't disappear into the sunset without another thank you once I succeed, and succeed I will d--mn it! πŸ˜‰
And will return to let you know of my nomination to the SU Hall of Fame.
      Cheers!

Helix.movThank God for people with patience. 😲 I have managed to get this far. So far so good... but, and I am guessing it is just maybe that I am grabbing the array in the wrong place, when I move (Option for me on a Mac) the array, it is still not lining up? Sigh... (Pardon the drifting off the blue axis)
