Finished my 29 truck that Steve (Hellnbak) shared with you as a WIP a few months ago. Primary workflow is SU8/Free -- Indigo -- Gimp. Hope you enjoy the renders.

RE: Finally, some more work by Jim Jeffries (JMJ Ohio)
I want to extend a special thanks to Steve for bringing me and my work back to the forum. The time and effort that he put into photo preparation, screen shots, narration and posting is deeply appreciated. Thanks Steve.
Mike, I don't consider myself a talented artist, more so a good technical illustrator. Machinery and product design was my primary occupation for many years. It's where I'm comfortable. I do a lot of research leading into and during a SketchUp project. I also use tons of construction geometry. For very complex parts I often create detailed multi view drawings in SU, turn them into groups or components and place them in the part to serve as templates. When it comes to organic surfaces, I fall on my face. If I can't describe something mathematically I start getting lost.
BTW, Steve's work is on my "A" list. I don't care if he stands on his head and works the keyboard with his toes to achieve it.Thanks everyone, it's good to be back.

RE: Bringing life to my 32 Ford Rod
View through the rear window of the 32. 160 mph speedo and 10K tach with redline set at 8500 rpm. Currently limiting the revs to about 6000 because Steve doesn't think the engine sounds good at idle. Waiting for him to tune it for me.
This image created after 60 minute bake at 2400x1200 res. Used combination of sun and an interior overhead light panel (300w) for lighting. Still limited on render lighting as IndigoRT doesn't support light layers or ies files.

Of course it died..... No fuel and no coolant. It only ran that little bit from fuel in the carbs.
It didn't die - I shutter down. That was just a tease start. You guys will have to pay to hear it really roar.

I'm running; i7 @ 2.67GHz, 9GB ram, NVIDIA GeForce 240 w/1GB ram, 64 bit system.
This model; 471,088 edges, 186,913 faces, 354 component defs, 117 materials.
No noticeable performance issue until I get to 1,000,000 or more edges. -
RE: Sports Coupe
Nice start Mike. Keep at it and the pieces will come together. Once you have the basic geometry defined attention to detail is what will make it stand out.
btw...
I don't think Steve is a stalker. He is a professional information gatherer. Who, What, Where and When. He might be a spy though. FBI, CIA, IRS, KGB...? Maybe all.

Now try applying textures to each part!
As installed in my 32 Ford rod. Still tweaking - model & renderings. These images were created with quick burns at low res, (2400 x ---). No post except for cropping and sizing for posting.

RE: Bringing life to my 32 Ford Rod
@ Kristoff and Andy - Thanks guys
This level of model detail does lead to more realistic renders but makes the texture and lighting application process much more involved. I'm just starting to experiment with individual lights versus using the sun only. Also have not ventured into any serious post p efforts yet. Learning as I go and I work very slowly.

RE: Bringing life to my 32 Ford Rod
Still working on the 32. This image is just out of the oven after a 30 minute bake. Will generate about a page of criticisms, observations and notes relative to a single image. Then more mapping, tweaking of existing maps and possibly some model geometry adjustments before I hit the render button again. I think it may take me longer to achieve satisfactory renderings than it took to build the model.

RE: CatchUp Edition 7
Rich -- The publication keeps getting better and better. The gallery section is a great addition and I feel very honored to have been included.
Also -- Do you know where I can buy a copy of Hellnbak's "Munster Koach"? I can only afford to spend about $13.99.

Nuff said
These images represent the efforts of an individual with absolutely no talent. I think you will all agree. No sense of proportion or attention to detail. Obviously does no research at all. And he creates these things at an alarming rate - one right after another. You can see more of them here.

I downloaded the 56 Fairlane from the warehouse, mapped a few textures, did very quick renders and no pp. The greatest effect by rendering is the shine of the paint. Otherwise his works are render quality directly from SU. I really feel sorry for you Steve.
@Idahoj -- Thank you - No additional tools, No plugins (for the modeling), No imports except for some textures.

RE: Bringing life to my 32 Ford Rod
Thanks - EscapeArtist, pbacot, Boo, andybot & swagen.
Continuing the rendering exploration and learning efforts on the 32. Purchased an IndigoRT license Sat. and can now work with a more dynamic toolset and lack of resolution restriction. Did initial mapping of paint, chrome (bright & satin), glass and cast wheels. Everything else is still the original SU materials and textures that Indigo maps as low value diffuse. I placed an image, actually a wall using an image as texture, behind the camera and in the scene in an attempt to project reflections in the paint. Have not been able to get this to work yet. Probably something very basic that I have not stumbled over yet. Until I do, the car body will look plastic. Using the sun as my only light source thus far. That's not true, mapped the "reflection wall" as Phong and gave it some medium intensity emitter values. I'll keep searching.
The learning curve is steep, but enjoying it so far.

@mitcorb
Thanks.
Easy -- the UI is very simple and somewhat intuitive, even for beginners. Was planning on using Gimp to pp layered scenes, but its scattered UI baffles me. Any experience there?

Bringing life to my 32 Ford Rod
Started some rendering efforts on my 32 Ford project. This is my first attempt at rendering, so I'm learning as I go. Currently using the free version of Indigo which limits resolution to a max of 0.7MP. Thus the grainy images. Planning on downloading and installing the full version over the weekend. Have only mapped about a dozen textures so far and most of these are in the interior. This is an early stage rendering WIP, so go easy on me.

RE: Have you had a model stolen?
Fee for an electronic filing is $35. The problem is with the legal fees you would encounter if taking legal action against someone.
Sooo...Steve, how many copies of my 32 have you sold. I think it's worth $1500 a pop. My lawyer will be in touch with your lawyer.

I think the following is the key. Then when you upload a file, identify it as contents copyrighted.

Copyrighting electronic media is a fairly straightforward process that can be accomplished in one sitting after the media have been completed. RE: Have you had a model stolen?
3d modeling is one of my hobbies and I enjoy sharing my creations with others. Some will download them to study and learn from and others may use them as components in their projects. Some will edit the original to suit their tastes and possibly morph it into something very different. And there are the talented rendering and post p folk who surf for models to be used to create fantastic images. I endorse all of this utilization. I do expect to be credited for my original efforts.
But...for someone to take outright credit for my work when there has been no value added by them, or worse yet, openly offer same for sale is totally unacceptable to me.
I'm willing to compromise a bit, but will not wholesale give up my freedoms in trade for better security, (encrypted software, password protection, etc...). I will probably be more discrete in the future and offer my major works by invitation only.
Here is the final reply from TurboSquid relative to the incident that prompted the start of this thread.
Recently a friend of mine submitted a request, see #87588 & #91544, regarding a model of mine that was downloaded from google 3d warehouse and offered for sale on your site by jessel sullivan. I go by the name JMJ-Ohio in the 3d warehouse. I do not know a jessel sullivan and gave no one authority to sell this model. Model in question is "Ford 427 V8 SOHC". Would you supply me details relative to the resolution of this issue.
Thank you,
Jim JeffriesHello,
I handled the case. We found that the model offered on the Google 3D Warehouse and the one on TurboSquid were the same. We took the model down and contacted the artist who posted it. The artist did not respond to our message and has been banned from TurboSquid.
Sincerely,
Kevin

Steve,
I have to do the line at a time thing to. Very time consuming.
Did you download the '32 from google docs?
Just saw your new roadster - Sweet. Because the car is so small any abrupt change in contour will cause a lumpy effect. Might try making the side (vent) indentations shallower???
JimJim,
Yes, I did download your amazing '32. Been studying it, trying to figure out how you achieved that level of perfection. Still eludes me. I hate you
So you think I should make the side indentations shallower? Hmmm. Might give that a try, thanks for pointing that out.
Still haven't heard back from them about your stolen engine. Coincidentally, a couple of weeks ago someone tipped me off that my '56 Ford had been posted on another site as somebody else's model. At least it was the first version, never got around to uploading the new improved version. Gotta get that thread started that we talked about.
So have you begun any new masterpieces? If so would love to see them.
Steve
Yea I saw the review on your '56 that called attention to the dirty deed. Would be great to identify these guys and? - First we hang them, then we shoot them, then we burn them. Model rustlers can't be dead enough.
No new project yet. One at a time for me and 55 and 60 hour work weeks don't leave much time for the fun stuff. Bin thinking about a top fuel drag boat. Create a blown nitro version of the cammer to put in it. Don't believe I've seen any race boats in the warehouse. I'll start doing some research, but who knows, that may lead me in a different direction. Ya know what I mean?
