Make sure edges are turned on in styles window go to view -edge style, check profiles and edges.

What version of blender are you using? I find that with the new 2.5 alpha builds, the exporter doesn't work properly yet. If you go back and try the same thing in 2.49 stable build, the .3ds export to sketchup works just fine.
