Oh gotcha, this is from a Google Earth image.

Try running Google earth in OpenGL mode, or if you are already, run it in the other mode. I forget exactly what the different video modes are called, but it seems that sometimes one of the modes will import black images.

      Chris

no the google earth thing was just an example that "once upon a time" lol i could get images to show but since upgrading i guess thats when the problem came up.

There have been reports of this before. I think it is a video card issue. Go download the newest drivers for your card and see if that helps,

      Chris

im pretty sure im updated on my video card, i guess im screwed.

EDIT: funny thing is i remember i could get the "current view" from Google earth prior to updating my video card and once i did update it i also started getting black images.

    • Importing jpeg comes out all black!

ive never done this till now, making a model using an image as a blueprint, but when i import the image onto sketchup it comes out all black, funny thing is in the import window the image does show up. I saved the file and went to open it and in the preview window i could see the image/blueprint on the ground but when i opened the file it was still all black. Is this a video card issue?

    • Quill inkline style?

As the title says, just wondering if there's a quill line style for sketchup. i like the thick to thin qualities and havent found something similar to it from the few styles ive seen available from users or default.

      Well there it is. WOW.
first of all i want to say that this is an awesome tribute to your father. The dedication you put into these models of yours are something to behold.

It's a shame we wont be seeing anymore eye candy soon but dude, you definitely leave us on a high note.

Phenomenal. Truly phenomenal. Everything about it is impressive but my god man, the level of detail on rotors is what really really impressed me. i just read through the whole thread and there is nothing more to add, everything has been said, except i do have a question: where is Eye Candy 3? And which was Eye Candy 1???

just wanted to point out this link to how Quesada created the cover:
      http://www.comicbookresources.com/?page=article&id=21572

He mentions someone named Patrick McGrath for designing the logo but no mention of you, Jason, for making the 3d model.

    • Benefit of working with layers in SU

As the title says, just wondering what do i gain by working in layers.

As of right now i've always used a single layer to build my models (nothing complicated) but lately during down time i decided to be ambitious and started modeling a fake city ("New City" i call it, a Metropolis like city) here are some of the questions i have:

      1. Would working in layers add to the file size?
      2. While working on the model, if i use a separate layer for every city block, would turning off all but the single layer im working on make for easier (i.e less hang time) work flow?

My pc is kinda old, bought in '05, has a 2.8ghz AMD Athlon and 512 of RAM, been meaning to add RAM for a long time now but have put it off so i guess if i add 1 or 2 gigs of RAM it might make things easier; also consider that sometimes I import .3ds figure models that avg about 3.5 mb each onto my SU model (which i use mainly to build "sets" for my comic book illustration purposes).

As far as this "New City" project of mine (im on my work pc so i cant show any pics now) is it wise (regardless of my current or future set up) to build a whole city on one single SU file or do you guys think it's best to keep it simple and maybe just work on a few blocks per file?

Also, another thing i never do is make components of the models i make. Like this New City, everything is built on top of a single flat plane, all the city blocks and buildings (still havent added windows, lights, cars to populate the model) come from one flat square source.

Right now the city is like a couple square miles big.

Anyway, i appreciate any help and tips you guys can offer me. Thnx.

    • RE: DAZ + SketchUp models

hmm, ok so here's where im at:

I found a plug in allowing me to import .obj files (exported from DAZ 3D)into SU, problem is the models come in incomplete, the figure comes with missing hands, no face, things of that sort, not to mention it takes forever to load and sometimes makes SU non responsive so i have to shut it down (each .obj file is on avg 9 mb)

Then i remembered i used to import my Poser figures as .3ds files, a feature DAZ doesnt have (exports figures as .bvh, .dae, .obj, .u3d) files were much smaller and no problem to load on SU.

      more experimenting....

BTW this also begs to question: if SU can export files as .obj, why cant it import .obj files?

    • RE: DAZ + SketchUp models

      hey solo

It's not so much the units that is the problem, i've experimented with various settings. I export the SU obj model in inches and import it as a carrera unit which has it as 1 unit= 1 in into DAZ. It's probably just the low poly count in the SU models themselves that just doesnt translate into what i have in mind. Like i said, I work and print almost exclusively in hidden line facestyle white background setting in SU. I guess it's best to show you how i used to work when i had Poser before i lost the cd and no longer had it on my PC, with Poser i could export their figures into SU and create my scene easily

      http://img33.imageshack.us/img33/63/awhummer2.jpg

and doing the reverse (importing from SU) into DAZ doesnt quite work for me for my practical use, that's why i was looking into a 3rd party software that could help me recreate this.

    • DAZ + SketchUp models

      Hey everyone, got a question:

Sometimes i compose scenes using DAZ 3D figures for tough perspective shots, and in DAZ i can import SU models as .obj but small details get lost in translation and when i print out the scene as a 2D jpg i cant make out the details on the models, so my question is is there any software where i can import both DAz figures and SU models to compose a scene without losing any quality of detail? BTW its no coincidence i use DAZ and SU since both are free (very limited expense budget) so i was wondering if there's a free alternative to what im looking for.

Recently i've been trying to compose my scenes seperately, posing my figures in DAZ and my background elements in SU and putting the scene together in Photoshop (ver. 7), but aligning the perspectives can be a pain, and i really like the b&w feature on SU...damn, im blanking out on the proper name for the setting, like this (borrowing this from spdesign hope he doesnt mind just for demo purposes):

      http://www.sketchucation.com/forums/scf/download/file.php?id=9184&mode=view

anyway which DAZ doesnt have that, i dont need color or rendering for my purposes, just contour lines. If there was a way to import DAZ figures into SU that would be awesome.

Anyway, sorry for the long rambling post, i hope you guys know what im talking about and can help a noob out, thnx.

Cool stuff Jason. I knew Quesada and other Marvel artists use SU, and i just saw your webpage and the other stuff is very cool, it's stuff like that that i want to apply my use of SU into my comic book work. Are those models available at the 3D Warehouse or does Marvel have exclusive rights?

    • Making debris and destruction

      hey all

Just signed up yesterday and i must say some of the stuff ive seen here is pretty awesome. Anyway i've been using SU off and on for about 2 years now, not really an expert yet but not totally a novice, im sorta like in between novice and intermediate.

Anyway i'm an aspiring comic book artist and yes, like most of us we hate drawing perspective and buildings and such but to me SU has made that aspect fun (with half the work done by SU 😉 ) and as some of you might or might not know stuff gets blown up and destroyed in comics and in my demented perfectionist mind i want thing to be "right", accurate or whatever, anyway to the point, i want to know what would be the best way make realistic debris and overall destruction within SU. Is it as simple as say...using the pencil tool to draw out the chunks from a building and detele them? what about if i have a figure punching a car, how can i warp the frame of the car? see what im getting at? Any useful tips in this matter would be greatly appreciated.
