      No luck repeating the crashes.

      Pretty sure it had to do with trying to close the SketchyPhysics Inspector window after opening existing models (some were sketchy physics models and others were not).

      Too bad. Well if it happens again let me know.

      I did notice if I had the Outliner Window open it would go nuts when Play/Pause button was pressed and the Inspector title bar would show a "Not Responding" message for a while, but it didn't crash SU.

      Sorry I cant fix this. Its in Sketchups code. 😞 Hopefully a future version will fix it.

    • RE: Car problems ;)

      There is a bug if you don't have at least one staticmesh in a scene. It will work if you add a "floor" or make the road a "staticmesh"

      That car is huge by the way. Remember size does matter in SketchyPhysics. A huge car will behave differently than a small one.

      Ok, so I've been toying with the new sketchy and i built this small car.
      The car itself works great though i seem to be having a problem with the road its on. I've posted it with this post so you guys can check it out.

      Oh, and I am open to critique... if you see something i could be doing better, please tell me πŸ˜„

      Maybe the toolbars are turned off. Go to View->Toolbars and make sure the Sketchy ones are checked.

      You can make the dialog not show up by closing with the UI button rather than just closing the window. Unfortunately I cant reliably detect the window closing.

      The crash is concerning. I tried doing a bunch of file->new's with the window open and could not reproduce it. Are there any other details about it you can tell me?

      Sometimes I am getting crashes when I do a File > New.

      I noticed that one a SketchyPhysics dialogs is automatically loaded with the new file (even if I manually closed all toolbars/dialogs prior to doing a File > New) and that seems cause the crash.

      One of my favorite new features in SketchyPhysics2 is the new quick connect objects.

      This video shows how easy it is to connect a wheel to a object.

      SketchyPhysics2 is here at last. At least in beta form. It probably has lots of bugs. And the documentation is minimal. So try at own risk.

      Chris

      New Features
      -New UI makes editing joints much easier
      -Four new joint types, servo, piston, motor and gyro.
      -Some joints can now be controlled. Options include UI slider,joystick (ps2 style) and oscillator.
      *Three new objects that make building jointed objects much much easier. wheel, door and lift. Try these.
      -Joints can now be grouped to make more complex joints. Hinge and piston for example.
      -Camera control via page descriptions or right click menu(while running)
      -New interactions, Kick a body by double clicking, Copy a body by Ctrl+double click.
      -Much larger worlds possible.

      here goes another question for all ruby-positive out there

      is it possible to find the parent of an attribute (simply said: find a group by its attribute?)

      i'm trying with a code like this to find all "john" groups

      Sketchup.active_model.active_entities.find_all {|x| (x.get_attribute "data", "name").index('john') > 0}

      and thanks!

      I think this is what you want:

      all=[]
      Sketchup.active_model.definitions.each{|cd|
         cd.instances.each{|ci|
            all.push(ci) if((ci.get_attribute("data", "name")).index('john') > 0)
         }
      }

      Boy, I don't get that. It should all work or none of it. Could you post a model that causes a bugsplat. I'll try it on my machine.

      Also a copy of the bugsplat data might be informative.

      Chris,
      Does or will Sketchy Physics be able to move an object along a path? I realize a path is not a "hinge", but my first impression is that it wouldn't be too difficult to impliment just a few parameters for a path ... speed/resistance/friction, object orientation, backwards and/or forwards motion, etc. With your new slider control it be ideal for demonstrating processes such raising and lowering a box or a car moving along a road or basic process flows.

      If it is possible already to do this, could you post an example of a simple model please? I've been looking for a way to do basic object animations for demonstrating mechanical processes without jumping through a bunch of hoops, creating hugh file sizes, or spending a huge amount time (getting quick turn-around times).
      Regard, John.

      The current version doesn't do movement along a path(that isn't straight). I have thought about it. And it's possible in theory but I would have to create a whole new joint from scratch. I'll probably add something like it in a future version. But not the next one.

      Some people have developed work arounds:

      I don't think the physics engine is really suitable for doing real world simulation. Its more for game style physics. Plus I don't know how I would go about modeling something like a nail.

    • SketchyPhysics fall update.

      I have been working on a new version of SketchyPhysics. Its still a few weeks away but I wanted to show off one new feature "controllable joints".

      The new joints are Servo, Piston and Motor. Each can be controlled by a slider or joystick.

      I uploaded a few videos to youtube:

    • RE: How can I store binary data in an attribute

      I have stored successfully binary data in attributes. Specifically a matrix.

      I did find a bug in get/set_attribute() that would cause the character 0x0d ('\n') to be replaced with 0x0d 0x0a. I got around it by replacing '\n' with 'I_AM_0D' in the string before packing. And of course reversing it after unpacking.

      Hope that helps.
