Thanks Mike i played with the volumetric fog on this one. It's subtle but you can see it in the distant treetops.

Thanks for the comments guys. Yes i could have more variation to the grass, i compromised for efficiency and used only one component instance.

I used the maxwell plugin that allows me to set the UV coordinates to "camera" then i adjust the mapping size

Here is an unmodified model. A 12 sided circle on a 12 segment arc using follow me (select arc then double click circle). One end of the tube open. I then ran erode followed by sub divide and smooth. The plugins do all the work ! 5 minutes modelling time.
