?can scenes be coppied or can anamitation play in reverse?

i have a SU model with 19 scenes that displays the operation of a tool and my goal is to have the tool appear to operate in forward as well as reverse. is it possible to either copy and place the existing scenes(1-19) in scenes 20-38 in reverse order, or have the animation play forward, reverse, than loop. my question is can this be done with out having to set up all 19 scenes and layers twice?

Unless somebody's created a ruby I don't know about, the only way is the looooong way. Copy each scene (right click on each existing scenes and select "add scene" -it's easier that way than using the scene manager)- then (using the scene manager this time) move every second scene into the reverse order. Tedious work for sure.
The only real help I can give you is a link to Todd Birch's brilliant free SceneRename ruby:
Once you've loaded it up you'll find "Renumber Scenes" at the bottom of your View menu- click it and it'll rename all your scenes in numerical order again after you've moved them all around. It's a real time saver.

perhaps one way of doing it would be to export your scenes (for this you will need the script PageExIm from Smustard), import them into your file and then rename them in inverse order. the first part is fast but the second is essentially manual. SceneRename can help you there.

thanks , your suggestion helped me to work through it. I added 19 additional scenes (#20-38) than updated each new scene in ascending order starting with # 20 with the view from each existing scene in descending order starting with # 19. it worked fine and here is the final result -
Well, Sean, for a simple jpg file you don't need either about 38 scenes nor this input here!
How about some animation now for us to see the result?

Im working on uploading the file and not just an image but i must be missing something cause it only displays the image and not the whole file.

Hehe, nice one.
I took me a while though to realize that I was just seeing the last two scene tabs and all the rest was out of sight (somewhere left) and I had to "rewind" the whole thing.First I thought you're just joking!
P.s. and yes, the idea of the ellipse cutting is fine, too! I guess it is settable so that you can also set the "excentricity" of the ellipse.

I guess in all the back and forth of uploading the model i didnt realize that i had saved the model at the last scene instead on scene 1.ps. on the actual jig itself the two bearings that ride along the jig and the plywood are adjustable and their location in relation to the router bit determines the major and minor axis of the ellipse.

Could be useful with fixed points if you have to cut the same ellipse over and over again.
OTOH it could always come in handy to add a little flexibility to a design. Once I've witnessed a totally disastrous conversion of a cigarette packing machine to a different size of cigarettes. Absolutely every part of the machine had a fixed size optimized for the old size cigarette. At the end they came to the conclusion that it would have been much cheaper to build a whole new machine from the ground up.

Carpentry entails being able to perform a selected action over and over again(ie, measuring, cutting, nailing) accurately and with consistant repeatability. This jig accomplishes both as well as being adjustable to cut any ratio of major/minor axis. Here is a good example of some ellipises i cut using this jig, different width but same height.

Just out of interest, if you often make working SU models, have you tried using the SketchyPhysics beta plugin? Check out the SketchyPhysics forum below to see what it's capable of. You'll need to install the plugin in to view the models in action, but it's one of the most pretty impressive (and free) SU plugins IMHO.
