Hi everyone,
Just thought i would introduce myself.
Upholsterer by trade.
Been in the furniture industry 30 odd years.Love design - artistic design - including architecture - textiles sculpture and form.
Amazingly we can get caught up in our own little world without realising the innovation & technology that is at our fingertips if we are prepared to take the plunge.
I had only recently come across Sketchup and am amazed at its capability from what i have seen so far. Have tried various other products thinking that they were going to be the
answer. However, i have spent two years in the wilderness not being able to find a software that would not be too technical for me, provide plenty of options for plugins - add ons.Started to view the Help Videos on line and will post from time to time asking some pretty basic questions.
I would like to start of with one question.
I took a photo of a furniture model i did some time ago.
Its in jpeg format.
Can i upload it into Sketchup and then manipulate both its shape and form in a 3D format?Cheers markcoinoz

and welcome to the forum. It's good to see another bod from down south has found the best group around. The answer to your question is a big YES. You'll read all about photo matching on page 161 of the Bible, that's what I call the 390 page SU Tutorial 
You can download it, if you haven't already, from the Google SU site. You'll find plenty of mates here cobber and some proffesional funiture makers among them. Download the tutorial, pour yourself a beerand get reading and practising. 
Well its Sat morning on the other side of the world so I dare say a few of the other lads and lasses will pop in to welcome you.

Yes, we will try to be of your help with whatever we can. The manual Bill mentioned is also available online (if you have a steady internet connection here (Windows version).
What I's suggest, go through it and parallelly do what it is saying, Really great resource.
About the jpg furniture model - yes, photomatch can be used but it has its boundaries. It was mainly "invented" to model rather "box-like" buldings so with more organic shapes you may wish to start from scratch.
But keep posting your "phases" of work or any question and we'll try to help.

i would also have a look at the videos by the guys at go-2-school (http://go-2-school.com/). at least a couple are on photomatch.

Well! That's a turnup for the books! Three posts in a row with Kiwi connections, bloody near 1/2 the population! 
Good to see you there Blahman, wot's your normal monicker? I spent 3 years in the NI when I was in the army, 2 in Waiouru and the last year I was all over the place as a batman/driver. It's different country up there, in fact I would call it sub-tropical in your neck of the wood and sub-antarctic across at Waiouru. Brrrrrr! Could you satisfy an old mans curiosity and tell me what a 'house detailer' does. I'm away behind the times here and haven't had occasion to keep up with modern professions and occupations.
Yeah Mark, there is still a lot of Scotish influence down here, and then as you get further south you are in Irish territory. It's very peacefull though as all the radicle stirrers seem to do all, or at least most of there stirring in the NI.

I work at building organisation that create 3d models of floorplans from the architects. We sort out the details of making the design work with timber, then press a button and guys on the floor make the frames and trusses from our 3d design.
We use the Mitek based system for the bulk of our work - Engineering the trusses and so forth. However sketchup is becoming an ever increasing useful tool. Most of the detailers/draughters have had a crash course in what I know. But I am also about to begin studying architecture part time.
Today I used sketchup to provide a 3d model of a "flitch beam - steel and timber) to masonary beam hangar. The ability to do this infront of a client in less than 5mins certainly adds to a wow factor.
My next part time project is to design a cheap 'golf hut' for our local golf course.
Sorry to wah on but very happy to live in the Mount, I think it is one of the nicest places in the world to visit let alone live.
