I heard my new compter shut down and start up again whilst being away from my computer. I tried to open my model from its file location but the last save was 3 days ago. I have done much work since then. When I open SU I can only see the files from 3 days ago on the startup page, and no "recovery" files as I would expect to be there. Any ideas anybody?
As you can see the auto save settins are to save every 5 minutes.

        Look in this folder...
        C:\Users\YOURNAME\AppData\Local\SketchUp\SketchUp 2021\SketchUp\working\SKETCHUP\RecoveredFiles
        It's hidden by default...
Any AutoSaved files are always stored there, but they only get kept if you have not had a successful save of the SKP.
The SKB back up is kept in the SKP's folder but you have to have save the model at least once.
Then the SKB backup is one save behind the model's SKP.
To open a .SKB change it's filetype suffix to .SKP so that SketchUp will open it...

Thanks TIG I got to that location (after showing hidden files) there were only SKP file extensions and no BAK files. I thought that SU would save backup files to the last saved location. In previous versions of SU I have used I was always relieved when I opened SU there would be a "recovered file" would be right there on my startup page. I wonder if it could have been that this computer is totally new and I only activated windows about half an hour ago? I will find out I guess 😉

The recovered location is where you find .SKP copies of a model if SketchUp crashes, otherwise they are deleted as that model is closed. You need to have the AutoSave option set in Preferences for this to happen.
The backup files are suffixed .SKB and are always saved with the model itself, again you need to have the backup option set in Preferences.
You change the .SKB suffix into .SKP for SketchUp to be able to open it.
A backup file is always one version behind the current model, and it is made whenever you save your model.
There are no .BAK files in SketchUp.
On a MAC the equivalent of a PC's .SKB is suffixed ~.SKP as the previous version of the model file...
