Heavy STL

Hi i downloaded a STL file of a intricate vase, must have 500k faces, i want to cut it in half horizontally and just print the lower part
I tried putting a plane through it and delete the top half,…well after about a hour of watching the spinning ball, i shut the computer down
Any one got a work around this?
Thanks Dean -
There are a variety of options, waiting being one of them, but without seeing the stl it would be guessing.

I’m not at work until Saturday will post then

Hi I’m having a problem uploading the stl file
First attempt said upload failed, second one I watched for 15 minutes as it slowly loaded then I left the shop
The file is 315mb which I think maybe is too big to upload
What do you think? -
That's about 312mb over the forum limit.
That is a ridiculously large file for one vase.
You could upload it to dropbox or similar and post a link to it here, someone may look at it. It is too big for me to download on my limited internet.
Perhaps a screenshot to begin with would give us some idea of what you are dealing with. -
How did you do it?
Another problem ,in sketch up I’ve put a hole in the bottom of the gnome, but in Cura it’s filled in -
Screenshot is too big aswell
If you go on thingiverse and look for Christmas gnome, you can see it -
Search Thingiverse - Thingiverse

There's many gnomes to pick from...
I had a look at the first .stl and its mesh is not manifold. So that needs fixing. The bottom of the hat, at the back, stands out.
But it's definitely doable...

How do you reduce a photo so it can be posted?

Boolean subtract using solid tools

Can't help I'm afraid. Cura is a fungal nail remedy in my part of the world.

I use imgur to host images and then use the bbcode with the url for the image to embed it.

Could you explain the solid tools a bit more

They are part of SketchUp. There's already extensive help docs under the help menu on how to use them.
It's a boolean subtract method. So select the cutter then the target and click Subtract. Go make a coffee, read the news and watch the clouds for a bit. When you come back it'll be done.
