Totally new to SketchUp, hoping to sketch the framing for a shed. I'm working with the free trial. When I draw a rectangle with the rectangle tool, it is rendered as an irregular polygon. What am I doing wrong?

Check the Camera. Looks like you are using perspective. If you change the Camera to parallel it will look more like what you were expecting.

It's not actually an irregular polygon. There are no edges displayed in a couple of place.I see what is known as clipping in your screen shot. This is actually more common when modeling with the camera set to Parallel Projection than when working in Perspective. Set the camera to Perspective (SketchUp is really designed to be used that way for modeling, anyway, and Parallel Projection is meant mainly for output.) Then hit Zoom Extents from the toolbar or from the Camera menu. After that you should see the whole rectangle as it should be.
