I am looking at a folder of a many components, SketchUp model files, which I have downloaded in a package. Using "column" view in the Mac finder, I can see the image of the model. As I click on more files, the file view goes to just showing the SketchUP logo, and I can't see the model preview any longer. Looking at other folders, the model preview is not showing either.

Same thing can happen in the Open dialog. At first I see the model preview in every little file icon. And in column view there is a large image of the model. After moving down the list the larger preview is no longer shown for any file (though the small icon preview may remain. Sometimes in Open dialog I can continue to see the model previews in "icon view"-- but in the Open dialog this view cannot be made large enough to be useful in selecting the component or previewing a SketchUp file.

The model preview option just seems to come and go. Other applications don't have this problem. Most applications show a preview of the contents in the finder.

The Mac previews are presented by a thing called a QuickLook Generator (QLG). SketchUp started including its own QLG only a few versions ago. It's not clear that it is fully stable - I too sometimes see the generic icon instead of a preview.
