Can't find Floor Generator plug-in
-
Hi, guys, I am new around here and I registered to get the floor generator plug-in by Sam D Mitch, which was highly recommended to me. However, I can't find it in the plug-in store. Is it no longer available?
Thanks, Mina -
It is/was indeed an excellent Extension.
Unfortunately Sam has withdrawn it.
It is no longer available from our PluginStore, or his own site - or anywhere else, as far as I know.He was forced to withdraw it following a "copyright infringement" claim - I think this came through Trimble & Google, and he couldn't establish who was behind it, so to be safe he withdrew it from publication.
To me his code does do some things similarly to a 3DS plugin [with a similar name], BUT I believe that he coded it completely from scratch in Ruby, and of course it works only with SketchUp, so there should be no overlap or confusion about the two separate tools...Unfortunately I don't know of a similar toolset.
The tool does have it's own thread and members regularly ask about getting its RBZ.

I don't know of anyone who has a old copy, or even if they did, would that would be 'legal' !? -
A very useful extension indeed.
The closest to it would probably be Oob layouts but it's not free.
I have both and use them interchangeably, depending on what I need to do.

Thank you very much!

Here is the header:#------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Permission to use, copy, modify, and distribute this software for
any purpose and without fee is hereby granted.
#------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Despite what the header says, I wouldn't be inclined to share it. It already brought unwarranted trouble to Sam once. I think enough of him that I wouldn't want to open him up to it again. Better to let sleeping dogs lie.
-
I'll not share it,
but I'm curious what copyright can have a plugin dividing a face in different configurations? It's possible only if the code is directly copied from another script. (I just don't know the reason and history around the problem). There are many plugins that can divide and extrude faces using existing geometry (lines/edges) - as a replacement for this plugin.
-
I don't know exactly on what grounds the copyright infringement was based. It seemed pretty clear at the time that the claim wasnot well-founded but they made so much trouble for Sam that he pulled it rather than fight it. It probably would have cost him large money in legal fees to fight it and for an extension he was giving away, it wouldn't make any sense to proceed.

The problem is a Kafkaesque one...
Google [and others - un-named] allege an infringement of copyright.
And thereby they block his site.
There are no details of this infringement.
So the 'accused' cannot defend himself.
They will not provide details to help.As far as I can tell the toolset's name is similar to one used in completely different software.
In that case it might be an infringement of a trade-name [although it's not within the same 'domain'] - but it's not copyright. Some of the toolset's tools do resemble the other app's toolset.
But they are all originally written, and do not copy any proprietary code - the two app's use diiferent API etc...So it's a bit like the police turning up at your house and threatening to arrest you for a poorly defined 'blanket' reason, and then they refuse to tell you any useful details of this matter, so you are unable try to understand and address the problem, but they continue to threaten further [unspecified] actions against you unless you desist under this blanket ban. You are stuck !
I thought Google were the good guys [at least they were !]
It's certainly not 'justice'... -
Sooo they are basically bulling him into not releasing his plugin?

Probably more of strong-arming than bullying.

Whatever it is, it's clear that Sam didn't want or need the harassment certainly for a free extension. Can't blame him.

The author didn't find the extension. He wrote it. It is no longer available, though. Read the through this thread. You should find some alternative.
