Blender forum in sketchucation

Something to keep in mind, all software, just like any analog tool, is only as good as how well you learn how to use it. The correct hammer and chisel in untrained hands will reveal a driveway from a block of marble instead of a David.
Some of us just need a driveway ( I could use a new one, concrete not marble). And a forum is helpful for learning how. Not much help in getting a David though (I'd need a TON more to get there myself )

Hey all,
As many of you may know, I have a course that takes you from modeling in SketchUp to rendering and animating using EEVEE (Blender's realtime photorealistic renderer) in Blender.
It's at https://gum.co/EEVEE
Also, here's one of the lessons from the course which may get some of you started. It's on IMPORTING from SketchUp to Blender while keeping the proper scale units.

Don't know if it's indispensable...because collada format seems working...
(i see that Premium SKetchucation members has a cool reduction) -
BlendUp is no longer available.
-
the main problem is, DAE is a poorly supported format.
no no! hear me out!
there's plenty of apps that write DAE.. but damn few that read it.
but there's plenty that do read OBJ - it's the almost universal 3D format..

So what is the best way to move my models to Blender 2.8?
I tried .dae and only parts showed up. I also tried fbx but got a message in Blener 2.8 that it did not support fbx.

See my YouTube video above. It walks you through all the settings.

@chipp, are they planning to add skp to supported import formats?

I've been consistently using .obj export for years with good results. I find duplicate faces and lots of other problems with .dae
You can use AutoDesk's FBX converter to convert to a different FBX format that will import correctly. I forget the details as I use it infrequently, but it is possible.

Do we have a subforum yet!? I want to discuss pros and cons of obj vs. dae format import. Nice intro video you linked Solo, glad to see they are finally taking seriously the UI compatibility with other software
We are still waiting for Rich O'Brien to create the subforum, I do not have admin rights to do it.

Sounds like some more changes coming to Sketchucation than just an additional subforum

OK, we'll get you guys a Blender forum for SketchUp users up and running.
We are doing some server upgrades at the moment as we need to move to a newer php version. So give us a day or 2 to get something set up.

Looking forward to the new Blender sub-forum. The 2.8 UI overhaul is unbelievable. Kudos all around for the blender devs that worked on that. Can't wait for more Blender topics....
In response to some threads above about DAE vs OBJ. I've been having good luck with DAE imports from SU. It places all objects in an "empty" and scales the empty to the correct units. Haven't had any problems with duplicate faces.
Now I'm just trying to figure out how to deal with "empty" object types in Blender.

I've also used the Blender skp importer add-on, but it only works up to 2.79 and then you can open in 2.8.
-
Thinking, while we're waiting, could we make clearly labeled threads (think "blenducation : having issues importing....") to go on with, with the labels making it easy to round em up and move them when the forums active?

I guess this never happened.
