      Hi,

I'm looking at putting a survey plan into sketchup so I can draw a building on the surveyed land. I haven't had much experience with this so I'm looking for ideas and suggestions along with any helpful plugins to assist with this task.

I have a DWG file with the survey, however I am only using sketchup make at this point in time.

As I can't import this file in sketchup make I am looking at using a plugin to recreate the survey plan into something I can work with. I have just seen a plugin on the warehouse called 2DXY that looks rather useful, is there any other plugins like this or any more extensive plugins that make this task much easier?

As for the topography of the land I am looking at using Toposhaper which I found on Sketchucation.

Can anyone break down the process of doing this? Is there any easier way or does anyone have any tips or suggestions.

      Thanks,
      David.

2DXY would be a good option although your profile indicates you are using SketchUp 8 and 2DXY only works in SketchUp 2016 and later. You'll need to update to a newer version of SketchUp or update your profile if SU8 isn't correct.

First of all, why would you want to do this?

If you're doing it professionally, Make shouldn't be your choice, but Pro.

You'll also have to know what coordinate system the survey was done in if you want to have it be geolocated in Sketchup

If you are venturing into anything like this...ditch the toy Make and bite the bullet and buy Pro.
If the CAD is flat...ie, no entities have z-axis height,,,then here's a rough outline of procedure I use.

              1. Make sure all polylines for contours are contiguous (without any breaks). Make sure all the kooky civil layers are deleted and you just have layer zero.
              2. Use a plugin like Simplify Contours to make sure that you don't' have arcs with a thousand segments
              3. Use Weld to make the polyline all one, well....polyline.
              4. Look at the contour elevations numbers on the survey and move the contours up on the z-axis as appropriate.
5 Use the From Contours tool in the sketchup Sandbox tool pallete.
              5. You will now have a nice TIN of the existing topography to work with...although the TIN is "irregular" faces...not nice square grid faces. You could use Chuck Vali's Simplify Terrain plugin ($) to convert the irregular mesh into the nice normal square-faced TIN. (easier to modify and work with)

I like Blackdogsketch's list except I'd use Toposhaper instead of sandbox, for a better terrain grid.

You will also find a SketchU plugin to easily model from a laser scanning point cloud, do not hesitate to contact me, thank you for your attention
