2001 Monolith on Moon + +

great storytelling - I look forward to the next steps.
there's a very fitting special exhibition here at the Filmmuseum Frankfurt right now
https://deutsches-filminstitut.de/filmmuseum/ausstellungen/sonderausstellung/ -
Fascinating start there.

Mike, HornOxx, thanks gentlemen. HornOxx, checked out the link you posted.... way cool exhibit. Wish a museum in my area did something like that.
-
Making progress.... I think. Have most of the bits and pieces modeled. Still have to do some work on the terrain and lights. Hope to start test renders, tweaking textures and lights. Maybe have some final renders by next week. Posting a couple of more shots of where things are at now.

No doubt you'll be draping a cloth over the monolith to keep out prying eyes until such time as you unveil it.

Aha.... now I have a reason to download "ClothWorks" .
-
Holy cow! That's a lot of modeling!
Excellent work!
-
Thanks Bryan. Yep there's quite a bit of stuff in the model. Thank goodness for components.
One final raw SU image. Have all my textures worked out ( I think ). This scene is rendering on my iMac right now. Created a fair number of "custom" textures for this one.
Thought about dropping a cloth over the monolith for this post as suggested by Box. Unfortunately not going to be able to play with ClothWorks until I upgrade from SU2015pro. . So I gift wrapped it instead .

I like where this is going, nicely done dood.
-
Thanks Mike. If all goes well should have some renders to post in the next couple of days....
-
Well for better or worse got a render of this thing finished. Hooray ! Rendered in Twilight. Lots of post pro. Probably did more post pro to this than anything else I've done. Still trying hard to get better at it.... Had to do quite a lot of fiddling with the light set up and textures to get something I thought was pretty good for me. Also posting a mono hidden line view of the scene. Think it looks pretty cool on it's own. Going to try and do some additional views as time allows. Hope you enjoy, have had fun working on it.

Oh Yeah Wow. That's really good! The lighting looks very much like the big flood ligts would produce. For the ones in view did you use emitter textures? Great glow in the back and star field!
-
Thanks pbacot. As for the lights, your correct all the lenses of the floodlights are fake emitters. Think I had the power at 1000 watts. For real light I used point lights just in front of the lenses and loaded the .ies files for actual floodlights that I downloaded off various light manufacturers websites. The small floods down the ramps each have an .ies flood that gives off 3000 lumens. The gang lights all have an .ies file for a flood rated at 20,000 lumens. The two gang lights facing the camera each have three 20,000 lumen floods spaced in a triangle. There's three gang lights just behind the camera position. Those have four of the 20,000 lumen floods spaced out in front. Also had the sun on. Set to Sky Color. Sun Strength 2.0 , Brightness 0.600 . Set the sky color to a grey R-70, G-70, B-70.

Well here you go with another view. Turned out better than I thought it was going to. This view really pushed my very basic post pro skills...... enjoy .
-
Wow, dood, you nailed that. Brilliant.
-
Thanks Mike.
