There are a few tools that already do this action.

The same for your other tool regards edge selection.

LoopLab has been around before Thomthoms Quad Face Tools.

I have dug it out of the grave because I am planning to work on it and make it better.

I usually release a plugin as an MVP and slowly iterate or pivot depending on user feedback or my own.

For ideas of where to take this tool I would look at Blender's Loop Tools.

Having this in SketchUp with support for QFT would be a good toolset.
