Modeling Terrain in Sketchup 8 or 2014
-
I am new to 3d printing and I was reading the book "3D Printing With Sketchup". In it, the author talks about modeling terrain using the Geo-Location tool in Sketchup. I run Ubuntu Linux on my computers. I have managed to get Sketchup 8 to run under wine and I have both 8 and 2014 running in VirtualBox under Windows XP. By adding the Sketchup.dat file to the 8 directory, the SU running under wine will open the Geo-Location site, albeit in the Firefox browser, so obviously that data isn't returned back to SU. Geo-Location doesn't work at all under VirtualBox I think because my graphics card isn't processing the OpenGL graphics correctly. I do not use Windows 7,8 or 10 nor do I have any desire to do so.
Long story short - I know, too late - is there any way that I can get the goe-location data into Sketchup manually, bypassing the built-in function? Thanks.

Have you tried getting the terrain data with SU2014?

I have, yes, but for some reason, the window that pops up is blank white. I can enter my address and click the (empty) [Search] button, but since the window is blank, I can't get anywhere. I enabled 3d graphics in VirtualBox, but I think something is not working right with the hardware.

You need to have Internet Explorer installed and up to date. Do you?
And before you say that Firefox is your default browser, not IE, it doesn't matter what your default browser is. SketchUp 2016 and earlier for Windows uses Internet Explorer for all web-based windows.

Yes, I know that IE is the browser SU uses
The IE version installed in Windows XP under VirtualBox is 8. I have tried to upgrade that to 9, but it wouldn't let me. I can't even run Windows Update because the browser is "out of date".
I would have thought that "current" version of IE for a 2014 program would equate to the version of IE that was current at the time that the program was released. I would further think that IE 8 would fill that requirement. No?
