I use Paint.net for removing image backgrounds & making images transparent(PNG's).

Does anyone know how to use Paint.net to add what I think is a "transparency mask" to an image background so that it is "truly transparent" in SU and produces accurate or actual shadows in SU with out having to "cut-out" the image or use rendering?

You can use the Lasso tool to select regions and then hit the Delete key to make them transparent. If you drag the lasso around the bit you want to keep, hit Edit>Invert Selection and then Delete.

Crop the image tightly around what you want to keep and then save as PNG.

After you've done the above, use TIG's Image Trimmer to trim around the edges to create a face the shape of the object and create a material from the imported image. I did something like that from a photo of my son for this old Christmas card.

I tried and failed. Alas;-) Actually Image Trimmer made SU unresponsive for about 15 mins (had a cuppa) and still hadn't finished so I used Task Manager to stop. Thought about how many edges I'd end up with and had second thoughts.

I've attached the image I'm working with. Maybe too much detail/edges etc.

Let me know what you think.

          Cheers.

Whoops - file size too big. Hmmm. Will attach a smaller image size later.

It's too difficult to keep up with your posts on the same topic in two different place. Just look at what I wrote over there. And please don't start another thread on it.

Where is 'over there' exactly? Not sure what your referring too? Very diplomatic of you, moderator.
