Mac Materials folder mess
-
Hey,
I'm fairly new to Sketchup though I have experience in Rhino and VectorWorks etc so I kind of know how the
program works 'under the hood'.What I have spent the day trying to figure out is
- Where the materials folder is
- How I can save favourite materials here
- How I can set up an easy routine on sharing this folder and bringing it into a new file on document setup
I have found a lot of help, or at least similar questions in the forums, but my understanding is that there is no
good tutorial on how to do this for mac and especially after the 2016 upgrade. Seems like the system of how the
folders are stored in finder changed after this release..?I have learned that it is wise to store the materials in a folder under 'Old materials' so that this folder(s) may not
be overwritten at any time, prob not the only way of doing it, but to me, I don't care if it is a folder on my desktop,
as long as I know where it is and what goes in it.I have tried through searching the computer, via Ruby console and through various tutorials to locate my materials
folder. It is nowhere to be found. As I say, I don't need to find it, if the solution to how I can import it so that I always bring my matlibrary with me,
is that I simply make my own folders. But the final and biggest question; how do I bring it into a new file, and share
this with others in my office? This is a very discussed theme, I know, but all I find in forum is outdated cause of the 2016 update, or for PC.
I just think Sketchup which is so easy and intuitive should have solved a basic problem like this? So it must be me:)Any help or experience on the issue is much welcome!

http://sketchucation.com/forums/viewtopic.php?f=15%26amp;t=52632 discusses Materials folder on a MAC.
Although it's a few years old the principles remain - adjust the SketchUp version number in the paths etc...There are several MAC users around, so I'm sure they'll offer good advice or folder sharing etc...

In the link provided, it suggest searching for 'Materials', but that isn't the best choice...
SU should have two Material folders but only makes the 'User' one when you make a new material inside SU...
so it better to look for a redundent [still included] folder that has always been placed in the User path...
to open it in Finder you can copy/paste into Ruby Console...
`open "#{Sketchup.find_support_file('OldColors')}"`
on mine that's
/Users/johns_iMac/Library/Application Support/SketchUp 2016/SketchUp/OldColors
In that SketchUp folder add a new folder named Materials [it will not get deleted on upgrading]...
add any material sub-folders into there, they must contain skm files to work...
once made drag it into the Finder sidebar for easy access
there are other gif mini tuts about add materials from inside SU...
