Using Components - need a hand...

yup read this - http://help.sketchup.com/en/article/114523 but I have a question, cos I've never gotten them to work properly for me and just end up putting a copy of what I wanted to use them for elsewhere in the scene...
how do I make one that loads in to the same position it was saved at? (instead of having to be placed)

you would need pro, so then you can make a dynamic component with fixed position, refer to stair post recent in dynamic components

I think we need more information about what you are trying to do. What kind of component and how are you using it? Perhaps you need to geo-locate it.

basically it's saving items out to work in greater detail then bring them back in to the same position to save resources / work quicker.. knowing me I've probably got the wrong idea of using components (but I need to learn how to use them anyway...) but it seemed this would be how you'd work it?
eg the rocket I was working on before my wrist fell apart, I want to save out the wing, work on it in greater detail in a scene on it's own, then load it back into the master scene. but with it loading exactly where it was in both scenes.

To me it seems like a lot of unneeded work to save a component out and work on it in a different file but if you want to do that, how about copying the component from the main SU drawing, opening a second SU session and using Edit Paste in Place to paste it. After making your modifications, repeat the process to go back.
Or save the component in a library (you could save all the components in a model as a collection. Then open the component you want to edit, make the changes and save it back to the same location. In the master file select the component in the drawing space then go to the collection in the Components window and replace the selection.

Another idea.... As you build your model work out the various sub structures as components. Example - wings, nose section, main fuselage, tail section etc. Assign each sub structure to it's own layer. When you want to work on a particular assembly , turn off layers for the other parts.
