[Plugin] FredoTools::SolidVolume - v1.4a - 10 Feb 20
-
SolidVolume is a standalone script which is part of FredoTools.
It computes the volume and the total faces area of the true solids (groups and component instances) in the selection.
SolidVolume gives the correct value regardless of the orientation of faces and the position in the model.
It is now based on a persistent web dialog box, allowing you to change the selection or use the outliner.
This follows an interesting discussion in this thread.
Select the solids and invoke SolidVolume
- in the contextual menu FredoTools > SolidVolume
- in the menu Tools > FredoTools > SolidVolume
- by clicking on the icon of SolidVolume (barrel)
In this second version, the volume and faces area is displayed in a persistent dialog box. As long as it is open, any change of selection will show the volume and area dynamically. You can choose your preferred units and number of decimals.
SolidVolume is installed as part of FredoTools 3.2c and above.
See the main post for this plugin for Installation of FredoTools

- SU Versions: SU2017 and above
- Platforms: Windows and Mac
- Languages: English
- Menus: by default, SolidVolume is installed in Tools > FredoTools. There is also an entry in the Contextual menu.

- The plugin is free, for private and commercial usage.
Just launch SolidVolume on a selection containing solids to compute their aggregate volume and the total area of their faces.
The dialog box is persistent so that you can change the selection, manually or via the outliner.
SolidVolume 1.2b – 12 Mar 18: Fix a bug in the calculation of volume (for certain solids where the center is outside the solid)
SolidVolume 1.2a – 09 Jul 15: Solid with holes are considered Solid and you can calculate its volume. Area of faces takes the holes into account
SolidVolume 1.1d – 29 Apr 15: fixes bug for the height of the dialog box
SolidVolume 1.1c – 28 Apr 15: fixes bugs in the calculation of volumes signaled by srx and ken
SolidVolume 1.1b – 27 Apr 15: fixes a small bug in the decimals for area
SolidVolume 1.1a – 27 Apr 15: Second public release in FredoTools 2.7b, with web dialog box and calcuation of faces area
SolidVolume 1.0a – 26 Apr 15: Initial public release in FredoTools 2.7a

Cool!
And about the M2 surfaces faces?
No possibility to add this inside this one? -
Thank you Fredo! You are my hero! This should be incorporated in Sketchup 2016 to prevent people for making mistakes in volume calculations..In the meantime we have Fredo Sketchup.
-
I am sorry, but plugin has some kind of problem with the geometry you can see in the example. I didn't know the volume calculation problem was so complex.
-
That's just a bug which I will fix. As long as the shape is a true solid, there is an exact solution.

And the model must be made in the rules of art!

NEW RELEASE: FredoTools::SolidVolume v1.1c - 28 Apr 15
SolidVolume 1.1a is a release with a few enhancements:
- It now computes the faces area of solids in the selection.
- The volume and areas are shown in a persistent dialog box, allowing you to change the selection and use the outliner.
- You can choose your preferred unit and number of decimals for display of values
See main post of this thread for more information.

NEW RELEASE: FredoTools::SolidVolume v1.1d - 29 Apr 15
SolidVolume 1.1d is a release fixing a problem of display of the main dialog box.
See main post of this thread for more information.

NEW RELEASE: FredoTools::SolidVolume v1.2a - 09 Jul 15
SolidVolume 1.2a is a minor release allowing holes for a shape to be considered as a solid. The Volume is computed as if there was no hole, but the area of faces takes the holes into account.
See main post of this thread for more information.

Hi Fredo
I was so happy to find this plug in volumes, but it seems there is a problem with the volumes. i had a complex solid an found a volume that seemed very big. So i try with a small cube with an hole (20 cm for each side) and there is definitively a bug. see image
I downloaded the latest versions of LibFredo, FredoTools (09 Jul 17) and that is the same
anyway, thanks a lot Fredo for all your super plugins !
have a good week !

You are right. There is definitely a bug and this is annoying.
I fixed it, and will re-release (as soon as the certification on EWH works again).Fredo

thanks for your reactivity !
will you publish a reply when it will be downloadable?Alex

Hi!
Calculation of volume is wrong in certain cases. See attached file.

Got it and fixed it. Need some repackaging and will publish soon.
By the way, the main interest of SolidVolume is that it is supposed to work on pseudo solids too, as shown in the video.

NEW RELEASE: FredoTools::SolidVolume v1.5a - 13 Nov 23
SolidVolume 1.5a is a major release fixing issues in the calculation of volumes in some situations where the solid is scaled. It also adds the capability to compute the volumes of pseudo-solids: objects with multiple solids inside, objects with holes in faces or some mssing faces.
See main post of this thread for more information.
