How does one "trim" a 2D picture imported into SU?

If you mean an Image, find my ImageTrimmer tool - please read the instructions carefully and ensure .jar files are set to execute in Java, not decompression app...

there is one [at least] in 3D warehouse, download and have a look at how it was done...
sounds like you need to be using the 'image' as texture, and paint it onto shapes you make...
