Bugs that have migrated to my new laptop
-
Can anyone advise me?
I recently bought a new 15" MacBook Pro, which has a better graphics card,RAM etc etc than my previous MacBook...I had the data transferred from the old machine to new one in the store. I then upgraded from SketchUp pro 2013 to 2014 and also installed the latest version of Shaderlight but all the bugs and glitches seemed to have migrated to the new machine?
These include; The workspace rarely opening to full screen even though I set it as this in Preferences
The floating Entity Info Bar disappearing (even though it states that it is open when viewed the the window drop down bar). The only way I have found to rectify this is by resetting the workspace and having then to open all the floating dialogue bars that I find useful to leave top right on the screen.
The Shaderlight tools that I have set in the top tool bar (under the customise tool bar option) keep disappearing.
Most alarming of all is both SketchUp and Layout are unexpectedly quitting on me with the same frequency as they did on my last machine that was the entry level 13" MacBook Pro....a supposedly much inferior specced machine than the one I have just upgraded to? I had put this down to pushing the last laptop too hard but know I am not so sure as the models I have been working on with the new machine have not been large and should not have challenged it in any way?
Can anyone recommend the best coarse of action to iron out these glitches?
Many Thanks

hmm.. this is sort of tough to pinpoint since quite a few things have happened.
it's possible that your sketchup .plist which came over from the 13" is keeping some of those settings.. (or, sketchup is thinking it's running on a 13" screen when it's really on 15 now... or, that the .plist became corrupted at some point due to the resolution differences.
[you used to be able to reset a .plist simply by deleting it then relaunching the app but not any more.. mavericks keeps a backup of all the .plist files and if you try to delete one, it pops back..]
try this first:
- quit sketchup 2014
- launch the Terminal application found in your Applications > Utilities folder.. a window with a command prompt appears
- type or copy/paste the following then press return
defaults delete com.sketchup.SketchUp.2014
- quit terminal and relaunch sketchup 2014
when you relaunch sketchup, it's going to be as if it's a first time install as you'll have a fresh .plist in which everything is at default values.
(your plugins will still be installed but you'll need to re choose a template, re-assign any keyboard shortcuts, re-configure your workspace preferences)this should clear up the problems with the window not maintaining its assigned size as well as the disappearing entity info panel..
i'm not sure about the shaderlight toolbar and not completely sure about the crashes but, more likely than not, the crashes are plugin related but get your working environment sorted out first..

Thanks Jeff
I really appreciate your advice....
I have followed your instructions and that seems to have sorted out the problem with the workspace and entities bar issues... The Shaderlight tools still go absent on reopening but it is no hardship to open their tool bar via View>Tool Palettes. Now I just have to figure out the causes of the crashes...
Many Thanks Again...

hmm.. that seems to be an issue i was experiencing upon updating to mavericks with 2013 and under..
(it's possible that the shaderlight plugin isn't written properly for mac but in those cases, the problem is exact opposite-- the toolbar won't remember that it's turned off)are you absolutely sure you're running su 2014? when you 'upgrade' sketchup, 2014 will install alongside 2013.. if you had a 2013 icon in your dock to launch then 2013 is still launching when you click it..
in sketchup, go to the SketchUp menu at top then click About SketchUp..
what does it say?

Hi Jeff
Apologies for the slow response..
Under About SketchUp it says it is 2014. I have left 2013 in applications but removed it from the bottom dock. Should I stick it in Trash?
I have just been trying to render quite a small model with Shader Light and SU is crashing every few minutes now?
You mentioned previously that a Plugin is probably the cause. Would you mind explaining the best way of fault finding...Is it possible to turn Plugins off temporarily or do you have to wipe them completely from the computer and then reinstall them one by one? Many Thanks for your continuing help...

no, it's fine and/or up to you.. both versions can coexist peacefully if you'd like.. i generally keep three versions of sketchup but not out of necessity.. if i didn't use this forum, i'd probably only have one version

turn off all the extensions in the Preferences first and relaunch sketchup.. does it crash now?
turn on an extension.. does it crash
then another.. etc.kinda painful
that said, sketchup2014 itself is the most stable version yet.. i've been using it a few months and have yet to crash it unless it was a plugin which caused the crashing.

I have turned off extensions in Preferences and also removed everything out of the plugins folder in the library via Applications leaving the extensions that come with SU (sandbox, dynamic components etc) and Shaderlight. The result is that it is still crashing?
Does this mean there is a problem with the renderer?
Is it worth uninstalling SU14 and Shaderlight and reinstalling?To improve my understanding of best practises;
What is the best method of installing plugins in SU. 2014? Is there anything I should avoid doing?
Thanks

Does this mean there is a problem with the renderer?well, what happens when you turn off Shaderlight? does sketchUp still crash?
or, sketchUp is crashing while rendering with / using shaderlight?because to me, it's starting to sound more and more like shaderLight is causing the crashes as well as the odd toolbar behavior you're seeing.. you probably should contact shaderlight support..

if it were me, i'd try to narrow down the cause a bit more and if i concluded shaderlight was the problem, i'd ditch it and go find another renderer but that's just me..
another problem is that shaderlight may be doing something 'bad' to the .plist ..so if you do decide to uninstall it, you should probably reset the .plist again as outlined earlier in order to get rid of any possible corruption the plugin may have caused.

the 'best' is to just use the sketchucation plugin store and trimbles built in extension warehouse.. if you get plugins from elsewhere, always try to get .rbz versions then install them via Sketchup->Preferences->Extensions->install Extensions..
doing that will eliminate any install errors.. unfortunately, it won't prevent errors in the plugin's code though
