Moving materials from one file to another?
-
If I have, say, a textured emitter in a model that I want to use in another model, what's the best way to do that?
The only way I can find is to save the material, go into my other scene and Import material, which is a fairly slow process if I have a lot of materials and for textured materials it resets the UV.
I've tried copying an object with the textured material into a new scene but that seems to strip it of it's vray material properties.
What am I missing?

What version of vfs? The latest versions are better about that.

I'm on 2.00.23590 which I believe is the latest.

Hrm...I just brought the same geometry in to fresh file and it did maintain the Vray material properties. Perhaps it's just an issue with the file I was importing it into?

Should be able to copy materials back and forth. They also now stay with components when you import them as well. You can now also create SKM libraries with your V-Ray settings associated with the material files.

I guess I'm still in the habit of only having vray turned on when I am actually rendering. I use Thomthom's excellent vray tools to keep vray unloaded until I need it. I do still run into issues of materials not keeping their vray properties sometimes, not sure what makes the difference.

the upcoming patch will add the ability to find external file references that are used in imported skp files which are used a component definitions. This should help with a number of missing file reference issues.
