Syd Mead's VEX (model progression)

Still struggling with the wheels. Just not enough detail in the reference pictures. I really just need to make a design decision and then go with it.
The rest looks easy enough to do.

You can do it, even if you have to make it up as you go.
You only have to make one.
This is true.

Thats funny, i only watched "Last day on mars" last nite and there was a rover the astronauts used to get around the surface that i was planning on modelling which is very similar to this rover, you can find details about the movie here but i will say its not a great movie but the near future tech is cool http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1709143/
Now you got me started, lol -
Test and hold until tomorrow.
-
Not much to look at right now. Just trying to get the overall outline shape and scale of the wheels.
Created as component and then duplicated and mirrored. That's the middle line down the middle.
-
Still planning out the treads. Those will probably be last.
Inner springs and central "hub" added.
Inner springs created same process as rim knuckles. (edit outer spring component, add inner spring half)
-
Never mind. Got inspired.
Believe it or not (I certainly don't) the wheel is almost done. An inner spring arch and then the outer treads and that's it! (the central support and steering column will come after)
Replaced test spring outlines with a Soap bubble plug-in construct, added depth with Joint Push/Pull, then regular Push/Pull to "back-fill", then made into component, then duplicated around the rim. Remaining surfaces deleted.
Pivot/knuckle joint on end connecting to rim was then added to the spring component and its editing level, instantly duplicating it for each.
-
First tread plate.
After the full tread assembly is completed by adding the spring arms, the large cylinder wall will be deleted, creating an open framework.
-
A very cool washing machine!
-
Looking good Bryan.
-
Thanks Box and Pilou, but I have to remake the tread. After experimenting with it last night, it's wrong.
-
What. A. Pain!
I had to free float the arcs for the tread springs and that only took a few hours to get aligned, then used the "Follow Me" tool to draw square tube along the arc and that took a few more hours.
So don't look to close because it still needs tweaking at the rim knuckle joints.
But more or less, this is it.

Great work on the wheel Bryan

Thank you iichiversii. I still feel kind of stupid because the result it not what I was looking for, but I only have two pictures to use as references.
I will be refining the wheels until next week.
Until I get tired of it.
Just two more things... just two more...

Cool kit but, sod mars and other off world jaunts, this would be MUCH better for the weekly shopping trip to tesco/asda et al.

It's done. On to the main vehicle.
-
Right now it's just a dog. And what do dogs say?
Rough, rough.
I can see this one is going to take about a month as well.
