Model disappears as panned
-
my model will move into some mystery plane that cuts through it as I pan. I don't know what I did to cause this feature, but it is unwanted at this point. How do I turn it off? The section plane is not on.
See below for before and after panning:

It's not a setting you made or anything you screwed up. That's the clipping plane. Switch your camera to Perspective and I bet it goes away.
You could think of this as occurring because the camera is passing through the model. It tends to happen when the camera is set to Parallel Projection while the camera is in close to the model and the model is quite large or a long way from the origin. You'll also see this sometimes if you are working at very tiny dimensions though that wouldn't be the problem in your case.
I find it almost never happens if i model in Perspective mode. If the default wide field of view causes you problems you can make it narrower by selecting the Zoom tool from the toolbar and entering either a smaller number for the angle of view or a higher number followed by mm for focal length. I usually like 75 to 85mm when I'm drawing.

Great! Mystery solved...I took it off perspective and now I am not having the same problem.

I think you mean you turned on Perspective.
You could zoom out and then return to Parallel Projection. It probably won't cause the clipping then. Since I have two eyes and stereo vision and look at the world in perspective, I think it is easier to work in SketchUp with the camera set to Perspective but some folks like working in Parallel Projection.

When "Perspective" is ON, the clipping occurs as you zoom in close. You can also pass through a face to see inside the model or what's behind the face. Note that clipping only becomes noticeable if you zoom into a line or vertex. Zooming into a face may not show clipping.
With perspective OFF, the clipping occurs as you zoom out (away) from the model. But you can zoom in extremely close without clipping. However you CANNOT pass through a face.
You can adjust the point of clipping by playing with the "field of view" but anything very different from default will look distorted at various zoom values.
