Paint Sampling Closes Group
-
I just did a clean install of the newest version of SketchUp on my windows 7 64 bit workstation. I now have an annoying bug in SketchUp that I have never encountered before.
If I open a group or component, use the paint bucket tool, hold down alt for the sample tool and click - the group closes all the way out (as in closes all of the nested groups that I may have drilled down through too). I have checked my preferences and shortcuts and I can't find anything that would cause this. In fact, if I'm not in the paint bucket tool alt clicking does not close groups at all.The paint bucket does actually sample the material, I just have to drill down to whatever I wanted to paint again. So for now it is just a productivity cramp, but in complex models that lost time is really going to add up.
Update: I was just trying the eyedropper tool in the materials menu too and it does the same thing! So apparently the alt click sequence has nothing to do with it; but any sampling of materials with the eyedropper tool closes all open groups in my install.
Any thoughts appreciated...Otherwise I will schedule a re-instal after my deadline and hope that fixes it...

Mac or PC? SU 8?
-
Ahh, I'm guessing PC since Mac doesn't have "alt". Is it SU8?

Thanks for showing an interest Chris. Nice to see that you are still an active part of the SU community after all of these years.
After a reboot solved the problem I repeated my previous actions. Turns out the plugin for Lumen RT 3 which I have not used since the previous version caused the problem. If I use the Lumen RT 3 eydropper tool under their material menu, thereafter the Sketchup eyedropper tool will close all open groups when used. I'm not finding a whole lot to love with this plugin lately...

That is interesting.
Have you been involved in the online forums for a long time? Did you go by a different name?
-
A final note on this. I had to run another live cube today and it seems any action I take with Lumen RT 3 inside of SketchUp 8 triggers this behavior on my Win 7 - 64 bit workstation. Restarting SketchUp puts things right again. I guess I'll avoid the plugin and see if the soon to be released version 4 is any better. Honestly I was just using it because they had an animated cat that looked a lot like my clients...
Chris, your name has been one of the most consistent features of SketchUp since I started using it in 2004. It's a testament to the stability and elegance of the program that I have rarely needed to peruse its forums; but when I have I almost always come across your comments or help. Trimble was smart to put you on the payroll! Best of luck in the new gig - and hey, make sure those guys stop fussing with logos and get us a 64-bit platform already...

So it's not a SketchUp bug but a problem caused by LumenRT?
-
That is correct. Now that I have had some time to sort things out it appears to be a bug caused by the Lumen RT 3 plugin. I did not have this problem with the Lumen RT 2 plugin, at least not that I know of, I rarely used it. Anyway, I'll take my crank over to the e-on forums...

I also have LumenRT 3 installed but I cannot reproduce this behaviour. Latest SU 8 and Windows 8 here.

Interesting...I unistalled Lumen RT 3 and updated to Lumen RT 4 which was just released today and I still get the same behavior. This is the only SU plugin I have installed at the moment. Maybe it is something unique to my configuration. I'll check over on e-on's forums when I have the chance to see if anyone else is experiencing this.
