This one is a bit odd, considering the amazing overall functionality of SU, but I can't snap on lines/guides while scaling??
Or do I need to find a way to scale numerically?

    Cheers

You should be able to use inference when scaling - except when using the corner grips. What is the exact case of your problem? Can you show a screenshot (ideally with the scale tool in operation)?

You should be able to snap to any existing objects when scaling - it's the way you make an object fit exactly into a 'gap' etc...
You can also type in dimensions when scaling.
Typing 2.5 will scale x2.5 from what that scale dimension currently is BUT type 2.5m and that dimension becomes 2.5 meters. To get Sketchup to take your input as a dimension rather than a scaling factor you just type a units suffix at the end [m,cm,mm,',"]...
