Components & Textures

I use components a lot while modelling, the only downside is they cannot have unique textures. Everything has to be exploded once modelled it's a nuisance. Is there a way around this ?

Hi Simon, what do you mean by "they cannot have unique textures" or that "everything has to be exploded"?
You can always edit a component and paint the faces inside. Here is a small tutorial I wrote about the basic differences between painting a component (or group) from "outside" or its faces "inside":

Gaieus i mean i want the geometry of components to be the same but not the texture mapping.

Ah, I see (I was actually wondering what you meant as I did not expect that you did not know what I wrote )
Anyway, I sometimes have the same "problem" (not really a real problem as this is the way it works). So in these cases, I keep the component definition the same until the very last moment when I need to make them different and then just make certain components unique (Richt click > make unique). This will break the link to the original component and I can then paint them differently but of course, any further change in the geometry won't reflect in the new components any more. But at least you need not explode...

If you want the same texture differently mapped on components you can use TIG's texture randomizer (you'll end with unique components). If you need to apply a different texture on a single component you can do right click on a component-->make unique and apply a different texture on that component.

Thanks for the replies guys. I am aware of make unique, it's just a shame to lose the benefits of components. I'd like to be able to group a bunch of components and paint them all with one huge map. I don't think this is going to happen.
