      Hi Forum!

      Hello from a newbie!

I have a newbie question. Does SketchUp have a function or a script that is similar to 3ds Max's "Isolate Object" feature?

      Thanks in advance

        Hello and welcome!

I have a 3dsmax newbie question, what does "Isolate Object" do?

Please explain what the function actually does, then maybe we can help you figure out if that feature is available in SketchUp πŸ˜„ Thanks!

        Chris

Perhaps you mean tools like View > Component Edit > Hide Rest of Model etc...
Or done simply by assigning Layers and switching them on/off to control various group/component object's visibility, perhaps suing the Outliner to select them before setting their layer...
Give US some clues her πŸ˜’

I'll try Hide Rest of Model script as you suggested.

Isolate Object in 3ds max is a handy feature to work on details on an object in a crowded scene. Just by selecting an object and right-click & Isolate Object will switch the screen to isolation mode.

            Thanks

"Component Edit > Hide rest of model" only works for groups and components, but as a visibility issue, it does what you suggest. I would recommend setting that to a hot key. that way you can edit components and groups in either mode instantly.

Indeed "Hide rest of model" may be what you are after. More exactly, SketchUp has thisfunction and not necessarily exactly what Max does.

You have other options, too, in case you use components (nd only components have these features).

                1. Copy a component to somewhere on the side of your model where it is not covered by other elements and work on it - the original copy will "inherit" every modification.
                2. Right click on a component and "save as..." Now open the saved file as a separate entity and work on it. Save, go back to the original file and right click on the component again and now "Reload..."
More on working with internal and external components can be read here: http://sketchucation.com/resources/tutorials/36-intermediate/115-internal-external-components
