Layers in different components
-
I am drawing 4 different tanks within sketchup which I have made as 1 component which has worked great so far for making changes and editing etc.
My boss has now asked me to show the construction sequence from the first wall on the first tank, to the last wall on the last tank for a video presentation to the client (using different scenes). This will mean splitting everything up.
Within each tank the wall is getting built up in 8 different sections
Worst case (which I think I will have to do) is to make 8 x 4 (32) new layers - 1 for each section of wall, and scrap the component.
I ideally want to keep the component, and build up using minimal amount of layers.
Anyone think of a workaround? I.e. is there a way to have layers permanantly on in one component and temporary on another?

I would make the tank out of component parts. It sounds like you'll need 32 but perhaps some of them are identical and would be instances of the same component. Then create the layers needed to control the visibility of each piece of the tank and associate the layers with the appropriate components. If you don't need to show each piece being added one at a time, multiple components can be associated with a single layer.
Make sure you leave all edges and faces on Layer 0 and leave Layer 0 active.
You could also create a nested component of the entire tank with all the parts included.

All,
You may be able to use section cut(s) to demonstrate an assembly sequence.Remember, you can have more than one active cut per scene.(show sections in attahced model for example)
See attached example please.
