Need Help to Create Convex Shape Using Existing Shape
-
I've been working on my own replicas from the Legend of Zelda series and carving them out on a CNC router. I'm currently working on a shield, and I'm having problems making a shield shape. I need something especially smooth, because it's going to be made out of wood.
What I've been doing is ripping the game disc to my computer and finding the model I want to carve and then refining the model in sketchup. In the file I've included (the .skp I've been working on for quite a long time, most of it trying to get the shield shape down), you can see 3 separate objects. The object on the left is the model I've refined, the model in the middle is the object I'm working on refining (the one I want convexed with minimal polygons) and the object on the right is the unmodified file I ripped from the game.
I've considered taking the convex shape from the model I ripped from the game and applying a smoothing filter to it, but when I do, no matter how much I smooth it, it always looks super polygonal in the CNC software. What needs to be done is just completely recreate the shape, but with less polygons. Or, if you know what I'm trying to do, which is basically smooth out the object on the right, if you could help me with that process it would be greatly appreciated if it's not too much work.

Have you tried Artisan or SubdivideAndSmooth ?
These would smooth and allow you to predefine 'creased' [sharp] edges too...
