Hi everyone, I am sure some people must have come across this problem before.. and I have read many posts about this error...
I couldnt open my original Sketchupfile or any backup files (.skb and .skp).. the "unexpected file format" message keeps popping out...
Is there a way that I can recover the files???? I have spent ages on it 😞
Or can I upload it somewhere for you guys to try opening it for me?
    Thanks a lot!!!

You can upload attachment with post if they are small enough. Otherwise use a service like Dropbox or similar.

I don't know if you have searched these, but use the string "skp, skb, unexpected file format" in the Google search box and see if the top three topics have any insight for you. There was something in the third topic that may work.

You found a solution? What was it? If you explain what the issue was and what you did to resolve it it might help other people with the same problem that find this thread.

Folks get this when trying to load an skb file (by double clicking) without setting the proper file associations (skp is set to SU when you install it but skb is not). You can always

              1. associate skb files to SU or
              2. launch SU and open an skb file via File > Open...

              Gai...

                @ThomThom:
Sorry that I did not elaborate on my comment, and sorry for the delay in reply. You posted just as I was trying to post, and I thought there might be something in that third item on the Google Results page, which is a blog or some other help page. My time was limited.
I certainly was not trying to confuse the issue.

I get this once in a great while when trying to open a SketchUp file someone has sent to me. The file is labeled as SKP and not SKB but it still won't work. The work around I've found (but don't understand the whys of) is e-mailing the file to myself. Then it'll open. I have no idea why this works but it has worked every time. Simply re-downloading the file from the original sender's e-mail hasn't worked for me.

...is this something related to Windows blocking downloaded files? When you need to open Properties and Unblock it?

Could be but it doesn't happen very often for me. If it is that, Windows isn't doing a very good job of blocking.

it may have something to do with the attachment encryption of the used email client, which normally affects text files (e.g. DXF) and Apple Mail only...

but u never know, wrapping e.g. a ZIP archive around the files does avoid this effect.

I have a student with this error message. I've tried e-mailing, changing the file extension and importing. No luck- Any help would be greatly appreciated!!!
