Thea's good -I own a license- but I'd wish there'd be an in depth tutorial on the biased renderer's settings. Hell, I'd pay for one.

How about presets? would they help?

Yes, presets for different lighting conditions would be great.

I would go with Thea and Modo, if I could afford it. You see, I'm not so professional as you guys are, but I love CG with all my heart.
I tried several apps , and I wish I could use them all. I like all...almost.
I never tried Thea, but I tried Modo,(401 I think) and it was awesome. Because I could almost finished a car. And I only knew some basic sub-d modeling (topology, chamfers, edges), and didn't had to learn how to use the tools, because there are few, and very powerful when you combine them (mostly falloffs, action centers).
As a conclusion, in my personal opinion, Modo is THE MODELER, and Thea THE RENDERER. Regarding the lack of 3d models, I would dare to say that I could easily import different format models, as I did in SU, but with better results.
I'm still waiting Stinkie to test Modo with his new light portals! πŸ˜„

It would be interesting to see a render time comparison between Vray for SU and Thea biased engine with the same scene. I did a small comparison some time ago with just the Cornell box and got better quality at half the time with Thea. I wonder how a more advanced scene would do?

Hm, yes. A bunch of scenario-specific presets ('interior draft', 'interior good' etc) to pick apart and compare -that'd be nice.

Ah yes, I should try those. From what I've read on the Lux forum, though, portals still need work, and 601 renders slower than 501.

Here is one where the guy tested Thea unbiased vs Vray biased, I know sounds crazy right? Imagine how it would have been if he tested Thea BSD (biased) vs Vray.

You're welcome to try this simple interior scene

well the lighting set up is simple.. so any engine can do this fast. for me keyshot/hypermove can render this even faster using just an hdri.

Yup it plays........impressive 22min!!!!!!! Im sold on it Pete. I dug up Thea yesterday and started doing some tuts. Just got sick of the limitations of using a renderer within SU.
are we on the same boat.. hating poly limitation here and doing workarounds. whilst im asking vray to do a stand alone, so that it wont be dependent with su shortcomings.

                        Hi Normeradona
I think we are in the same boat. The reason for the work around was the high poly limitation. I dont want to have to rely on work arounds. Like you, I think the fix for Vray is to have a standalone app for Sketchup. Dont think this will happen though. Kind of goes against the gain of Vrays development direction with Rhino. I would imagine to develop a new Vray standalone for Sketchup would take sometime. But here's hoping I'm wrong.
I love seeing how you are doing with Thea Render. Has really inspired me to learn it.
