I'm asking this in the newbie section because I'd be embarrassed to ask it elsewhere even though I don't consider myself a newbie with SU. I assume I'm missing a newbie method. Here goes.

When I click on the object to move, the object sometimes gets in the way of the target. If I then go to try to turn on xray view, the ctrl key makes an unwanted duplicate of the object. Additionally, sometimes xray view is so cluttered that I can't find the target.

I could turn on xray mode every time before I make a move, but this is overkill. What I end up doing usually is making the move in several steps or aborting the move, turning on xray view, then initiating the move again. Alternatively, I try at times to rotate the view around in the middle of the move, but then I sometimes get stuck inside a wall or some other object and start screaming. This behavior drives me mad!

Why not change your X-ray shortcut [using Window>Preferences>Shortcuts, use filter='x-ray' to find it easily] to avoid the Ctrl+X altogether? Use say Alt+X ?? Then you won't be pressing Ctrl at all to confuse Move [or Rotate or other tools waiting for that key press].

Done, and thanks. And when the scene is too cluttered in xray mode to know where to go?

If you have made your various 'parts' as groups or component-instances [i.e. the 'right way' to set up a model] you can then set View > Component Edit toggles, to hide the rest of the model and/or similar components while you edit - in this way clutter can be reduced.
Also using Layers for these various parts allows you to 'switch off' objects that are not needed immediately and so open up what can be seen.
Having some Scene tabs set that remember a View and its Layer settings lets you quickly go back to the previous state.
Also if you want to get inside single objects, then a Section-Plane placed on a main face can give you uncluttered access to the object's insides...
