Is it just me...?

Turn off the TV, don't buy newspapers and turn off the internet for a few hours and put on a Pink Floyd album.
Make a nice mug of coffee and sit outside or by a window and watch the clouds/birds/day go by.
Locally thing are just fine.

I agree it's depressing. I was reading this National Geographic article the other day and thinking about the irreparable damage we are doing to the Earth. Yeah, need to unplug sometimes to take a breather, Spring here is beautiful, best to get outside and enjoy it.

I like Rich's idea. And, I think he has diagnosed the problem well. The ailment is in the information channel.

I think it was ever thus [at least since we invented 'civilization']... it's just we are 'told how bad it is' it every second of the day...
But although we are all too good at making a mess we are also good at fixing things...We do need to do something about the mess we have inherited, that have made and that will make - we think what we are doing and use our brains to mitigate and address these problems.
These issues range from environmental, through economic, to society and morality.
But one person's 'problem' is another person's 'challenge'.After all problems are just solutions waiting to happen.
So chill [switch off the 'news' - which is clearly biased to 'bad-news']...
But if you really want to change the world then do something about it...Tiny 'positive changes', each made by one person, add up to become something really significant; just as every tiny 'error of judgment' that you [and the rest of us] have made have eventually added up to get us where we are now...
Try to leave the world a better place than it was when you arrived in it... -
You guys might be right. I do need to relax for a bit......but these problems will still be there...sigh.
@TIG I know that all problems have a solution no matter how tough it seems, it's just that sometimes it feels that most people don't care enough about the problem, they deny there is one or even create new ones. It's really frustrating.
I wish to think that I'm doing my best at being a better person and doing my small part but in fact I realize I'm just standing still not knowing which direction to take.
Truly a wiseman was the person that said that ignorance is bliss. -
Marian, you are too young to remember the opposite - when (at least in this part of the World) all news were good news and bad news never reached us. I do not think that was a better time though. We had to watch / listen to "good news" about our "wise leaders" all the time. I guess it was probably even worse in Romania - at least by the end of Ceausescu's regime.
And indeed; it must have always been like this - only communications was less effective and now that it is effective, news sources even need to compete so the "no news is good news" theory is even more apparent.

I think a little thing called "Sphere of Influence" is worth adopting. (as well as Rich and Tig's advice)
Make change happen by letting those around you see the positive results of the changes you have made. -
I think that, actually, the world is becoming a better place. Yes, there are conflicts around the world, but that has always been the case. There was a time when it was much more common, though. War was considered a normal tool of diplomacy for all nations. Not to mention slavery, famine, disease, and death and destruction through natural disasters. There was a time when humanitarian aid was minimal if non-existant.

We are living in a very wired age, everything that happens gets reported and most of us belong to news groups sending us news 24/7, we are getting overloaded with news and opinion.
Every now and again we need to unplug and smell the coffee/roses/farts.
-
Exactly. Believe me, you tend to get more value out of those things when you spend your best years dodging shells

I have been relaxing for a few hours now and while I'm not as stressed out as I was when I made the thread, I'm still concerned about the major issues in the world and in my country.
The constant news feed is not the issue, it's what is in the news. I don't watch tv almost at all nowadays, just check stuff out on facebook, autoblog, popsci, deviantart and here. Even so the big issues trickle down into my perception.
I acknowledge that there are good, fuzzy and funny things happening all over the world and people are indeed working on solutions for our problems, but I'm still frustrated at the situation we are in.
I'm not in despair or panicked, most of time I'm hopeful and positive about the future, but we all must be aware of the ongoing problems and be concerned about the way they are handled. It's pretty obvious that with things being as they are we can't go on the same path forever, some part of the system will break and if we are not ready, our whole global civilization will go down the toilet.By some estimates we may have as little as 15-20 years before our consumerist grotwth based economy completely collapses, other estimates put climate change as a major ireversible problem by 2050.
With those two gigantic problems looming overhead and awaiting a solution what are the governments of the world doing now? This is what really irks me, they're making laws to limit individual freedom in order to increase the profits of corporations, they're trying to outlaw abortion because of religious bullshit, even here in my country, some people are talking about reinstating the death penalty here....while others do the always present fighting, killing and massacring of innocents.
I guess it's just as well we're going back to the middle ages socially because it's quite possible our grandchildren will actually live in it.
I see the world is getting better and better, but some aspect are getting worse so I'm really afraid we're going to lose this world if we are careless or conceited.
