For me, it is most definitely a time issue. I would love to have time to tinker with car models, but between young children and my business in arch-vis, there is just absolutely no spare time for "fun" (or as you mention - self-inflicted pain)

Solo, you're the exception. Your models are in a whole galaxie apart from us regular modelers. The level of your work is completely unobtainable by people like me, so I don't feel threatened by them. Ok, sometimes I do bang my head against the wall, but I'm into pain so that's no problem.
In other words, I wanna see your Ariel Atom and new Zonda models. I just patched my wall so I'm ready.

I have several cars at a certain stage but it is such a tear your hair out process I get to the point of just giving up most of the time. The inconsistent responses of various plug-ins do not help, that and the memory issues of a 32 bit program.

Tanks are a bit easier for the most part but subjects like the Chieftain and others with compound curves are much as cars.

There is ely862me and there used to be RayOchoa. Haven't seen him lately. Ogan Ocali has posted cars. scottpara did a nice little series of "CARicatures", I think, with modified proportions.

I take the slow, deliberate approach in my aimless wandering.

We have Gabriel Concha working for us who's modelled just about vehicle out there...but he's never posted here. I don't think he even visits...too busy modelling cars, probably. ๐Ÿ˜‰

You're not alone, but you are probably a fairly rare breed, modelling autos to that degree of detail...for the love of it rather than for practical architectural entourage purposes. Keep it up though, your models are always a joy to behold.

                      Couldn't agree more.

I'd love to have a go at modelling vehicles at some point, but I do find it a bit of a daunting challenge. There's also a good chance that I'll end up spending way too much time on small details.

Yeah, those are incredible models. I downloaded every one (bulk image downloader) to study as I get time. He has much more imagination than I do, I'd have to take drugs to be that original and creative, and who can afford drugs nowdays? ๐Ÿ˜†

But what I was really asking about is why there are so few people posting car models here on the forums. I guess a big part of the answer is that the shapes involved are just too difficult and time-consuming, and I can understand that.

But possibly an even bigger reason, and one that I hadn't even thought of, is that a lot of you are spending most of your time and effort towards making models for your clients. For some reason it's a little difficult for me to think of using SU as part of your job. I tend to just see everyone here using it for fun, like me. But looking at it in that light, I can understand why investing the amount of time a decent car model can take would be a luxury that probably not many can afford, at least not on a regular basis. As somebody mentioned, it would be difficult to make a living making 3D car models (except for maybe selling them on Cornucopia ๐Ÿ˜‰ )

So anyhow I do appreciate all your input. I'll just keep chugging away at my four-wheeled thingamajigs.

there are several websites to sell car models as well as having your own website. although some of them make you give up selling them anywhere else and they are very strict about the content and how it's made. as with the Checkmate system at TurboSquid. http://support.turbosquid.com/entries/20203606

I use SU for work and fun... however my fun consists of modding games and making new things to go in games like rFactor and rFactor 2. I build cars and then drive them in a simulator. http://rfactor.net/web/rf2/ if I could get paid to do that? then I would die a happy man. but I love doing houses too.

Thanks Kris, but actually my comment about selling my cars on Cornucopia was just a joke (somebody stole several of my cars and was selling them on there until I got them pulled). Don't think I would ever sell any of my stuff, that would put a whole new flavor to my efforts, wouldn't be just fun anymore.

Would really like to see some of the cars you've made for rfactor
