im making a model for presentation purpose in which i will show various components like this way

all walls transparent, slabs solid [to articulate them]

complete building transparent, beams as solid colour.

so i'm working in layers - beams, walls, slabs, windows etc.

Is there a way to turn all objects in a layer transparent?

Are you using image based textures (and in fact, several images on objects on the same layer)? Would "colour by layer" do it (and then you can tweak the layer colour)?

        Gai...

You can make two versions of the textured material, one with transparency.
You can apply materials with textures to layers too - so use the transparent one on the 'transparent layers' - although of course you will loose the ability to adjust the Texture when the materials are 'by layer' - because it's then just like applying the material directly onto a group/instance which also has no adjustment to Textures on individual faces...

okay. and is it possible to apply the colours of a layer [in the layers menu] to all the objects in that layer. that is to say they get painted with that colour to the layer to which they belong?

                  No.
There is scant access to layer.materials in the API...
However using the Layer Manager to isolate a particular layer lets you select all and then use the Material tool to paint all selected en mass...
That way you avoid the material-by-layer method all together and use the normal material [textured] display settings...

If you are very desperate, you can group your geometry by layer and that way it's easier to handle such things but of course, this way you lose much of the editing ease of your model:
