      Howdy folks,

After checking out some of the rendering solutions available and being a long time Twilight user, I've decided to purchase Vray, but from reading this forum it seems quite a lot of you are having some issues with it.

Should I wait till they fix these problems or take the plunge and wait for the updates?

      Thanks,
      O2bwln

We won't have a new version of V-Ray for SketchUp out for at least a couple of months. We are finishing up development on V-Ray for Rhino some time in the next month, and then we can begin planning our next development cycle. We are aiming to have simultaneous development for both products with this next development cycle.

It's still plenty useable, I've found workarounds for pretty much everything thus far. The biggest limitation honestly has been Sketchup and the 32 bit environment. If you need it, go for it.

            some of the workarounds:

            • copy and paste only when vray is not enabled (either on another computer or through plugin manager)
            • save vismats (material definitions) for reloading if you do lose vray material information.
            • only have one window of vray open, will crash the rendering with multiple windows open.
            • for saved irradiance maps, need to have autosave checked and a file selected.

Those are the main ones I can think of, others can add to this if it's helpful to have a list.

Don't buy the app (or any other app, for that matter) without trying it out extensively first.

Well, right, @o2bwin assuming you've done the month trial...

I completely agree with this statement. There is a somewhat difficult learning curve that comes with our product, mainly because of lack of documentation. We will be addressing some of the limitations and bugs that are in this current release in our next development cycle, but until we can address those issues, there are workarounds, as andybot (thanks!) mentioned. Of course the next version is always going to be better, so try out the demo, if you like it, cool, if not, we'll try to get you next time 😉

There is documentation out there if you look through the net. Between all the videos on the Chaos YouTube page, the manuals that exist for the plug-in, and other V-Ray for Max sites, you can get a good handle on this plug-in. I have to admit it took me a good year before I was comfortable with it. So plan on putting some serious time into it. But once you know V-Ray, you can use that if you move on to MAX or Blender, so it pays off. I would recommend it highly.
