i have put together a very random assortment of shapes and would like to somehow convert it not a solid so I can use boolean on it. Is this possible and if so, how?

You can use ThomThom Solid inspector:

My SoliderSolver will also try to auto-solve the geometry into a solid, if you give it a chance; while Thomthom's tool will show the issues that need fixing... You might fix some major ones before trying to 'solve' it...

No problem! New members often post twice because they think their first post failed... from now one you should have no such doubts...
